1. ذَكّراني عَهْدَ الصبا بسعاد

    وخَوافي الجوى عليَّ بوادي

    Your memory reminds me of the bliss of youth

    And my anxiety for the beloved in the valleys

  2. ورَواحي مع الهوى وغدوّي

    لا عداها يوماً مصبُّ الغوادي

    My soul accompanying passion and my rising at dawn

    To none other than the destination of passions

  3. وبياض المشيب سَوَّدَ حَظي

    عِنْدَ بيض المها سوادَ المداد

    The whiteness of old age has darkened my fortune

    When the white hair darkened the ink

  4. يا ابن وُدِّي وللمودَّة حقٌّ

    فاقضِ إن شئتَ لي حقوق الوداد

    O son of my love, for love there is a right

    So fulfill, if you wish, the rights of affection

  5. وأَعِدْ لي ما كانَ من برحاء

    كنتُ منها في طاعة وانقياد

    And restore to me what was between us

    When I was obedient and compliant to them

  6. يومَ حانَ الوداع من آل ميّ

    فأرانا تَفَتُّتَ الأَكباد

    The day of farewell came from the house of Mayya

    And it tore our livers apart

  7. تركوا عَبرتي تصوب وَوَجدي

    في هياجٍ ومهجتي في اتّقاد

    They left my tears flowing and my love flaming

    In turmoil, and my entrails burning

  8. هلْ علمْتُمْ في بينكم أنَّ عيني

    لم تذق بعدكم لذيذ الرقاد

    Do you know that since you left

    My eyes have not tasted the sweetness of slumber?

  9. لا أذوق الكرى ولا أطعمُ الغم

    ضَ ولا تَنثني لطيفٍ وسادي

    I enjoy neither food nor drink

    No pillow soothes me or bed comforts me

  10. واللَّيالي الَّتي تَمرُّ وتمضي

    ألَّفَتْ بين مقلتي والسُّهاد

    And the nights that pass and go

    Have made my eyelids familiar with wakefulness

  11. كلّ يومٍ أرى اصطباري عنكم

    في انتقاص ولوعَتي في ازدياد

    Each day I see my patience with you

    Decreasing while my agony increases

  12. قد أخذتم منِّي الفؤاد فردُّوا

    في تَدانيكم عَليَّ فؤادي

    You have taken my heart, so return

    In your nearness, my heart to me

  13. وأعيدوا ما كانَ منَّا ومنكم

    وليَكُنْ ما جَرى على المعتاد

    And restore what was between us

    And let what transpired return to normal

  14. أينَ عهدي بهم فقد طال عهدي

    فسُقي عهدهم بصَوب عِهاد

    Where is my pact with them? For long has my pact

    Been quenched on the side of remoteness

  15. فمرضي في هواك زادني سقاماً

    فَلَعلِّي أراك في عوَّادي

    My sickness for your love has made me more sick

    Perhaps I will see you during my relapse

  16. فَدموعي على هَواك غزارٌ

    وفؤادي إلى رضابك صادي

    My copious tears for your love

    And my heart inclined toward your plains

  17. يا عَذولاً يَظُنُّ أنَّ صلاحي

    في سُلُوِّي وذاك عينُ فَسادي

    O blamer who thinks my rectitude

    Is in my solitude - that is the source of my ruin

  18. أنا فيما أراه عنكَ بوادٍ

    في هيامي وأنتَ عنِّي بواد

    I am distraught with passion for you

    While you are distant from me

  19. إنَّما أعينُ الظِّباء وما يج

    هل منها مصارع الآساد

    The gazelles' eyes do not look

    Toward the lairs of lions

  20. ما أراني من القوام المفدَّى

    ما أراني من القنا الميَّاد

    I do not see myself as a perfect guide

    Nor as a towering minaret

  21. ولحاظٍ كأنَّهنَّ بقلبي

    مُرهَفَات سُلَّتْ من الأَغماد

    A glance that pierces my heart

    Like swords drawn from scabbards

  22. أيُّ قلبٍ عذَّبته بصدودٍ

    ودُنُوٍّ نَغَّصَتْهُ ببعاد

    What heart has tortured with rejection

    And vexed with distance and aloofness?

  23. لم يُفدْني تطلُّبي من ثِمادٍ

    أبتغيه ورقَّةٍ من جَماد

    My pursuit has not benefited me

    I seek but a page from the inanimate

  24. ما لحظي من اغترابي وما لي

    موُلعٌ بالاتهام والإِنجاد

    My estrangement and accusation of me -

    I am obsessed with blame and marshaling proof

  25. ويَدُ البين طالما قَذَفَتْني

    غُرَّةً في دكادك ووهاد

    And the hand of separation has long

    Cast me as prey amid peril and pits

  26. وتَقَلَّبْتُ في البلاد وماذا

    أبتَغي من تَقَلُّبي في البلاد

    I roamed the lands - so what

    Did I seek from roaming the lands?

  27. ليتَ شعري وليتني كنتُ أدري

    ما مرامي من النوى ومرادي

    Would that I knew, would that I had known

    My purpose of resolve and intent!

  28. وببغدادَ من أُحاولُ فيها

    أشْرَفُ الحاضرين في بغداد

    In Baghdad, whom do I resort to

    The noblest of the eminent in Baghdad?

  29. وهو عبد الرحمن نجلُ عليٍّ

    عَلَويُّ الآباء والأَجداد

    It is Abdul Rahman, son of Ali

    Noble in lineage and ancestry

  30. التَّقيّ النَّقيّ قولاً وفعلاً

    والكريمُ الجوادُ وابنُ الجواد

    The pious, the pure in word and deed

    The generous, open-handed, son of the open-handed

  31. رفعَ اللهُ ذِكره في المعالي

    من عَليِّ العُلى رفيع العماد

    May God elevate his mention in the heights

    From exalted Ali, lofty in pillars

  32. شَرَفٌ باذخ ورفعةُ ذكر

    رَغِمَتْ عندها أُنوفُ الأَعادي

    A conspicuous nobility and famed honor

    That have vexed the enemies' noses

  33. هكذا هكذا المكارم تروى

    والمزايا من طارف وتلاد

    This is how, this is how virtues are attained

    And merits from a gentle branch and sprig

  34. ساد بالعلم والتُّقى سيّد النا

    س فخاراً للسَّادة الأَمجاد

    He excelled the people in knowledge and piety

    An honor for the honored grand figures

  35. يَقتَني المالَ للنَّوال وإنْ كا

    نَ لَعَمري فيه من الزهّاد

    He earns money for spending while he

    Is truly among the ascetics, by my life

  36. شرح اللهُ صدْرَهُ فأرانا

    في سَواد الخطوب بيض الأَيادي

    May God ease his heart, so He shows us

    White hands amid the darkness of afflictions

  37. كم رَوَتْنا الرُّواة عنه حديثاً

    صَحَّ عندي بصحّة الإِسناد

    How much did the narrators relate to us about him

    Reports validated to me by legitimate chains

  38. وأَعَدْتُ الحديثَ عنه فقالوا

    ما أُحيلى هذا الحديث المعاد

    And I prepared a narrative of him, and they said:

    "How excellent is this renewed account!"

  39. فَيُريني حلاوة الجود جوداً

    وأُريه حَلاوةَ الإِنشاد

    So he shows me the sweetness of generosity with generosity

    And I show him the sweetness of singing his praises

  40. عَلِمَ اللهُ أنَّه في حِجاهُ

    مُفْرَدُ العَصْر واحدُ الآحاد

    God knows that he alone in his era

    Is the unique one of the age, singular among the unique

  41. صَيْرَفِيُّ الكلام لفظاً ومعنًى

    من بصير بذوقهِ نقَّاد

    The eloquent speaker in diction and meaning

    To one who is discerning of its taste and critique

  42. يعرف الفضل أهْلَهُ وذَووه

    وامتياز الأَضداد بالأَضداد

    He recognizes merit and its people

    And distinction of opposites by opposites

  43. إنْ تغابَتْ عنه أُناسٌ لأمرٍ

    أَو عَمَتْ عنه أعينُ الحسَّاد

    If some people are blinded to him for a reason

    Or the eyes of the envious are clouded from him

  44. فكذاك البياض وهو نقيٌّ

    مُبْتلى في نقائه بالسَّواد

    So it is with white, though it is pure

    Tested in its purity by blackness

  45. يا بني الغوث والرُّجوع إليكم

    حينَ تعدو من الخطوب العوادي

    O people of succor and return, when you

    Repel the afflictions, O people of return!

  46. يكشف الله فيكم الضُّرَّ عنَّا

    وبكم نَقْتَفي سَبيلَ الرَّشاد

    May God reveal, through you, relief from adversity for us

    And by you we pursue the path of propriety

  47. كيفَ لا نستمدُّ من رُوحِ قوم

    شُفَعَاء لنا بيوم المعاد

    Why would we not draw strength from the spirit of a people

    Intercessors for us on the Day of Recompense?

  48. رضيَ الله عنهم ورضوا عنه

    خيار العباد بين العباد

    May God be pleased with them and they with Him

    The elite of worshippers among worshippers

  49. فولائي لهم وخالص حبِّي

    هو ديني ومذهبي واعتقادي

    My loyalty to them and utter love

    Is my creed, my doctrine, my belief

  50. فعلى ذلك الجناب اعتمادي

    وإلى ذلك الجناب استنادي

    So in that lineage lies my dependence

    And to that lineage lies my reliance

  51. فضلكم يشمل العُفاة جميعاً

    ونداكم للصادر الوَرَّاد

    Your superiority encompasses all the weak

    And your help is for the driven wanderer

  52. إنَّ لله فيكم كنز عِلْمٍ

    ما له ما بقيتم من نفاد

    God has for you a treasure of knowledge

    That will never be depleted as long as you remain

  53. إنْ حدا هذه القصائد حادٍ

    فلها من جميل فِعلك حادي

    If these poems have exceeded the proper bounds

    Then they are guided by your beautiful deeds

  54. وعليكم تملي القوافي ثناءً

    عطراتِ الأَنفاسِ في كلِّ ناد

    And upon you I impose rhymes of praise

    Fragrant breaths in every place

  55. وإذا ما أردْتُ مدحَ سواكُم

    فكأنِّي اخترطت شوك القتاد

    And if I wanted to praise other than you

    It is as if I sowed thorns of goatheads

  56. ربحت فيكم تجارة شعري

    لا رماها في غيركم بالكساد

    I gained profit in you for my poetry

    That has cast it nowhere else in loss

  57. أنا في شكركم أروح وأغدو

    فأنا الرَّائح الشكورُ الغادي

    I, in gratitude for you, go and return

    For I am the grateful wanderer, the returning one
