1. عيدي بيوم شفائِكم لسقامي

    إنْ تَعطفوا يوماً فذاك مرامي

    My Eid is the day of your recovery from illness

    If you show kindness one day, that is my hope

  2. يا خلَّةً أرعى ذِمام ودادهم

    ولو انهم نقضوا عهود ذمامي

    O stable companions, I tend to their reins of friendship

    Even if they break their promises and pacts

  3. رعياً لأيام خَلَوْنَ بقُربهم

    لم أسلُها بتعاقب الأيام

    I shepherd the days I spent close to them

    I did not ask them for the succession of days

  4. يا أيها الريَّان من ماءٍ بها

    هل موردٌ لغليل قلبي الظامي

    O you who pour from a water in it

    Is there a place to quench my thirsty soul?

  5. فلقد طوَيْتُ على هواك جوانحي

    وعَصيْتُ فيك ملامة اللوام

    So I have folded my wings over your love

    And disobeyed the blame of blamers in you

  6. فاستبق من دنف الفؤاد بقيةً

    لولاك ما ملك الزمان زمامي

    So take from the bosom of my heart the rest

    If not for you, time would not have taken my reins

  7. هلاّ سمحتَ بزورة فَوَجدْتها

    مقرونةً بالرحب والإكرام

    Why didn't you allow a visit, you would have found it

    Coupled with vastness and honor

  8. حيّ الربوع النازلين بذي الغضا

    وسقيت ذاك الحيّ صوب غمام

    He revived the meadows descending in the rain

    And watered the living towards the clouds

  9. ظعنوا فما أبقَوا لمسلوب الحشى

    إلاَّ توقُّد لوعة وغرام

    They were hostile, so they left nothing for the dispossessed

    Except the burning anguish and love

  10. من كلِّ أحوى ما تلفَّتَ طرْفُه

    إلاَّ ادَّكرْتُ تَلَفُّتَ الآرام

    From all I love, none turned their gaze

    Except I remembered your gentle glances

  11. يا حادي الأظعان يزعجها النوى

    فتخذ خدّ فدافد ومرامي

    O guide of the camels that are disturbed by the descent

    Take to the cheek replacement and my shelter

  12. بالله إنْ يمَّمْتَ ذيّاك الحمى

    بلِّغ أُميمَ تحيَّتي وسلامي

    By God, if you are determined to that fever

    Convey my greetings and peace to Umayma

  13. مذ غابَ عن عينيَّ نورُ شموسهم

    ما ذاقت الأَجفان طيب منام

    Since the light of their suns disappeared from my eyes

    The eyelids did not taste the sweetness of sleep

  14. ما للحمَام أهاجَ لي برح الأَسى

    هذا الحمَام يروم جلب حمامي

    Why did the pigeons stir sorrow for me at the abode of grief

    These pigeons intend to bring my pigeons

  15. يتلو صبابات الهُيام بوجده

    أَترى هيام الورق مثل هيامي

    It recites the warbles of passions with its love

    Do you think the warbles of leaves are like my warbles?

  16. قمْ يا نديم وعاطنيها قرقفاً

    فالعيش بين منادم ومدام

    Rise up my companion and give it to me brimming

    For living between drinking companions and wine

  17. راح إذا لَمَعَتْ بكأسٍ خِلْتَها

    برقاً تألَّقَ من خلال غمام

    When it shines in a cup, you have emptied it

    A lightning that sparkled amid the clouds

  18. تتراقَصُ الكاساتُ في إقبالها

    كتراقُصِ الأَرواح بالأَجسام

    The cups dance in their approach

    Like the dance of spirits in bodies

  19. جَمَحَتْ بنا خيلُ المسرَّة برهةً

    والعيشُ كالغصن الرَّطيب النَّامي

    The horses of joy carried us for a while

    And living is like the soft growing branch

  20. أيَّام مرجعُها علينا مُنيتي

    إنَّ المنى كوساوس الأَحلام

    Days whose purpose turns against us

    Purpose is like the delusions of dreams

  21. أَمُواعد الأَجفان منه بزورةٍ

    ما كانَ ذاك المزن غير جهام

    Promises of eyelids from it with a visit

    That auspicious time was none other than guessing

  22. فاشفع زيارتك الَّتي قد زرتني

    واللَّيل قد أرخى سدول ظلام

    So intercede your visit which you visited me

    And the night had let down the curtains of darkness

  23. لما أَلمَّ يُميط لي سُجُفَ الدُّجى

    وفَقَدْتُ في وجدانه آلامي

    When the remover of darkness uncovered for me

    And I lost in its fondness my pains

  24. ورَمَتْ لواحِظُه نِصالَ صَبابةٍ

    ها قد أصابَ القلبَ ذاك الرَّامي

    And its glances shot arrows of youth

    So that arrow has hit the heart, that shooter

  25. لا غروَ إنْ هام الفؤاد به جوًى

    إنَّ الغرام مُوَكَّلٌ بهيامي

    No wonder if the heart swoons for it

    For love is commissioned with my passions

  26. أنَّى تصيَّدني الغزالُ فريسةً

    عَهدي الغزال فريسة الضرغام

    How does the gazelle hunt me down as prey

    I am accustomed to the gazelle being prey to the hunter

  27. أهوى على حبّ الجَمال تغزُّلي

    وعلى مديح أبي الثناء نظامي

    I swoon in love for beauty in my amorous verse

    And in praising the father of eulogy, Al-Natham

  28. مفتي العراقين الَّذي بعلومِهِ

    قد فاخرت بغدادُ أرضَ الشَّام

    The jurist of the two Iraqs, whose knowledge

    Baghdad prided itself over Syria’s land

  29. أين السَّحائب من مكارم أُنْمُلٍ

    في المكرُمات ينابع الإِكرام

    Where are the clouds compared to Anmul’s generosity

    For generosity springs from generosity

  30. إنْ شحَّ هطَّالُ السَّحاب بغيثه

    فسحابه في كلّ وقت هامي

    If the downpour of clouds was scarce in its rain

    His cloud at all times is my shelter

  31. لا زالَ من لين العريكةِ باسماً

    كتبسُّم الأَزهار بالأَكمام

    He still has a gentle name from gentleness

    Like the smile of flowers in buds

  32. يفترُّ في وجه المؤَمّل ثغره

    وكذا افترار البارق البسَّام

    His mouth grins at the hopeful one

    And such is the flickering of the sharp lightning

  33. ما بين منطقه العجيب وقلبه

    صدرٌ يفيض ببحر علمٍ طامي

    What is between his wondrous speech and heart

    A chest overflowing with a surging sea of knowledge

  34. أحيا به الله الشَّريعة والهدى

    وأقام فيه شعائر الإِسلام

    He revived by it the Divine Law and guidance

    And upheld in it the rituals of Islam

  35. يجدي العباد بنانُه وبيانُه

    دُرَّين دُرَّ ندًى ودرَّ كلام

    His warmth and eloquence benefit people

    Two excellences, the excellence of dew and speech

  36. حِكَمٌ على أهل العقول يبثّها

    متقونة الأَوضاع والأَحكام

    Wisdoms upon the rational people he disseminates

    Precise in positions and rulings

  37. ويريك في أَلفاظه وكلامه

    سِحْرَ العقول وحيرةَ الأَفهام

    And he shows you in his words and speech

    The magic of minds and confusion of understandings

  38. كم أعرَبَتْ أَلفاظُه عن حاله

    يوماً فأَعْجَمَ منطقَ الأَعْجام

    How much his words expressed his state

    One day rendering the speech of non-Arabs inarticulate

  39. ولقد أدار على الورى جام الحجى

    فالناس صرعى راحَ ذاك الجام

    He turned for people the cup of proof

    So people fell like victims, that cup

  40. من كلّ مكرمةٍ وكلّ فضيلةٍ

    قد حلَّ منها في محلٍّ سامي

    Of every virtue and merit

    He has attained an exalted position

  41. تمَّت به حسن المعالي والعلى

    ومحاسن الأَشياء بالإِتمام

    By him good traits and highness were completed

    And beauties of things completed

  42. من ذا يهنِّي الوافدين بسيِّدٍ

    جُبِلَتْ سجيَّتُه على الإِكرام

    Who can congratulate the visitors for a master

    Whose innate disposition is inclined to generosity

  43. ويقولُ نائله لطالب فضله

    حُيِّيت بين أكارمٍ وكرام

    And tell his attainer, asker of his grace

    You are greeted among the generous and honorable

  44. ولربَّ رأي بالأُمور مجرّبٍ

    تغني مضاربه عن الصَّمصام

    By many an opinion in matters, experienced

    His tents suffice, dispensing with obstructers

  45. قدَّ الحوادث غاربٌ من حدِّه

    فكأَنَّه في الخطب حدُّ حسام

    The vicissitudes of time, a dive from his limit

    As if he in tribulations is the edge of a sword

  46. والله ما فتك الكميُّ برمحه

    يوماً كفتك يديه بالأَقلام

    By God, the brave never conquered with his spear

    As his hands conquered with pens

  47. وطوائف لم يُفْحَموا في مَبحثٍ

    ذاقت لديه مرارةَ الإِفحام

    And groups not routed in a discussion

    Tasted with him the bitterness of rout

  48. ببلاغةٍ وبراعةٍ قُسِّيَّةٍ

    وقَعَتْ على الأَغيار وقع سهام

    With eloquence, skill, and firmness

    Falling upon the ignorant like arrows

  49. إنْ يحسُدوك الجاهلون على النهى

    لا تحسُدُ الكرماءَ غيرُ لئام

    If the ignorant envy you for deterrence

    The generous are only envied by the vile

  50. ولقد تفاخرت فيك سادات الورى

    أَنتَ افتخار السَّادة الأَعلام

    The masters of the world boasted of you

    You are the pride of the highest nobles

  51. يا كعبةً قد جئتُ أَبغي حجّها

    فأَخذتُ شعري أهبة الإِحرام

    O Kaaba, I came seeking its pilgrimage

    So I brought my poetry, assuming pilgrim sanctity

  52. عام بك للعيد وجهك عيده

    فليفتخر فيها على الأَعوام

    A year for you for the Feast and your face is its Feast

    So let it pride upon the years for it

  53. لم أرضَ منك وإنْ بَذَلْتَ جوائزاً

    لكنْ رضاؤك مطلبي ومرامي

    I am not pleased with you even if you grant prizes

    But your pleasure is my goal and hope
