1. طرفٌ يراعي النَّجم وهو مؤرَّقُ

    وجوًى تكادُ به الجوانح تُحْرَقُ

    A gazelle grazing under the stars, restless,

    A heart almost burnt by passion,

  2. ومع الذين أودّهم لي في الدُّجى

    عتب يرقّ وعبرة تترقرق

    With those I loved in the darkness,

    My reproach melts and tears flow.

  3. إنِّي لأذكرهم على شحط النوى

    فتظلّ عيني بالمدامع تشرق

    I remember them when the stars ascend,

    My eyes brim with tears.

  4. يا سعد قد ألف السهاد متيَّمٌ

    دامي الحشاشة مستهام شيّق

    O Saad, the sleepless lover tosses,

    My insomnia continues, exciting.

  5. ماذا تقول وكيف ظنّك بالكرى

    أيراجع الأَجفان وهو مطلَّق

    What do you say? What do you think of fate?

  6. أمْ هل يعود لنا الزمان بما مضى

    من لهوه والعود غضّ مورق

    Will it relent, though now implacable?

    Or will time past return to us again

  7. أيَّام ترفل بالشباب وعيشنا

    فيما تسرُّ به النُّفوس منمّق

    With its joys, its wine of bright bubbles?

    Days that revel in youth and in our life

  8. واهاً لعيشك بين أكناف الحمى

    وأحبَّة بالجزع لم يتفرَّقوا

    When souls delight in its pleasures.

    Alas for your life among ardent passions

  9. في منزلٍ نشأت به زهر الرّيا

    وسقاه ريقته السحاب المغدق

    And loved ones who will not disperse in grief.

    In an abode where I was raised, the flowers of meadows bloomed

  10. والورق تطربنا بسجع لحونها

    والبان يرقص تارةً ويصفّق

    Watered by plentiful rainclouds.

    Leaves danced to the rhymes of their tones

  11. أمَّا خمائله وأيّ خمائل

    فالسندسُ المخضرُّ والإستبرق

    And lightning flashed and clapped.

    As for vine leaves, what leaves!

  12. كشفَ الربيعُ لنا مخايل وجهه

    فيها وطابَ صبوحنا والمغبق

    Green satin and smooth silk.

    Spring revealed its beauty,

  13. فرياضنا زهر النجوم وكأسنا

    يسعى بها ساقٍ أغنُّ مقرطق

    And our mornings were radiant and clear.

    Our meadows were stars in bloom and our cup

  14. برزت بنوَّار الشقيق فلم يزل

    بدر الدجنة عندها يتشقَّق

    Borne by a slender and graceful hand,

    Anemones appeared like shining moons

  15. فكأَنَّ كأس الرَّاح برق لامع

    وكأَنَّ جنح الليل غيم مطبق

    The full moon was cracked next to them,

    As if the cup of wine was a flashing light,

  16. ومهفهف الأعطاف تحسب أنَّه

    قمر بدُريّ النجوم ممنطق

    And the wings of night a thick cloud,

    The fluttering sleeves you’d think

  17. يرنو إليك بمقلة سحَّارة

    تهوى ملاحتها القلوب وتشفق

    A crescent moon bedecked with stars.

    It gazes at you with a bewitching glance,

  18. أرأيت ما فعلت نواظر شادن

    لم يلتفت لدم يطل ويهرق

    Melting hearts that ache with passion.

    Have you seen what Samad’s eyes have done?

  19. يا أيُّها الرشأ الذي ألحاظه

    ترمي بأسهمها القلوبَ وترشق

    Not caring for blood spilled and shed.

    O you with glances like arrows

  20. قلبي أسيرٌ في هواك معذَّب

    فأنا المقيَّد في هواك المطلق

    That pierce hearts and wound them.

    My heart is your prisoner, tortured in love,

  21. ولقد أرقْت لك الدموع بأسرها

    شوقاً فما لك لا ترقّ وترفق

    I'm fettered while you roam free.

    For you I have shed copious tears

  22. هلاّ رجعت إلى وصال متيَّم

    شبَّ الغرام وشاب فيه المفرق

    In longing, yet you do not soften or pity.

    Why not return to unite with your lover?

  23. فامنن عليَّ بقبلةٍ تسخو بها

    كرماً كما يتصدَّق المتصدِّق

    Youth has ended and we are separated.

    So favor me with a kiss to quench

  24. هيهات فاتت بعد فائتة الصبا

    لذاتنا الّلاتي لها أتشوَّق

    My thirst, give generously as charity.

    Alas the days of youth are gone

  25. ذهبتْ ولم تذهب عليها حشرة

    في كلِّ يوم تستجدّ وتخلق

    Those days I longed for are no more.

    They went but their sorrows remain

  26. وعفت منازل للهوى ومعالم

    كانَ الزمان بها عليه رونق

    Renewed each day, created anew.

    The abodes of love and their landmarks

  27. أعِدِ الحديث عن الديار وقل لنا

    بأبيك ما فعل الحمى والأَبرق

    Are ruined, their beauty gone.

    Speak of the dwellings and tell us

  28. لا جاز أرضك يا منازل مرعد

    من عارضٍ يسقي ثراك ومبرق

    How fare the tribe and their tents?

    Does anyone visit your land, watering the traces

  29. واعشوشبت منك البقاع وأينعت

    منك الأزاهير التي تتأنَّق

    Left by tents, households, and settlements?

    Are its meadows still verdant, still graced

  30. أنَّى تغيَّرت البلاد وأهلها

    وأتى عليها الدهر وهو مفرق

    By flowers adorned in elegance?

    How the lands and people have changed!

  31. وتبدَّلت تلك الوجوه بغيرها

    غربت بدور ما هنالك تشرق

    Time has marched on, dividing and scattering.

    Those faces are gone, replaced by others.

  32. نعم الذين شقيت من أدبي بهم

    فيما لقيت فما نعمت ولا شقوا

    The houses no longer shine.

    It was my fortune to suffer at the hands

  33. هذي هي الدنيا كما تريانها

    حرم اللبيب بها وفازَ الأَحمق

    Of some whose favor I failed to win.

    Such is this world that you see

  34. فصبرت فيها والخطوب متاحة

    لا ضاجر منها ولا أنا مشفق

    It has cheated the wise and rewarded the fool.

    So I have been patient with ever-ready disasters,

  35. حتَّى رأيت النائبات تقولُ لي

    عجباً لصبرك كيف لا يتمرق

    Neither cursing them nor fearing their blows,

    Until misfortunes told me

  36. ومذ امتدحت أبا الجميل فلا يدي

    صفر ولا أنا من نداه مملّق

    “Wondrous is your patience, steadfast still!”

    Since I praised Abu Al-Jamil, no one applauds me,

  37. حملت مناقبه الرواة بأسرها

    فمغرّب بثنائه ومشرّق

    My voice is hoarse and I flatter no patrons.

    The narrators have transmitted fully his virtues

  38. من مبلغ الشّعراء عنِّي أنَّني

    في الجدِّ شاعره المجيد المفلق

    My praise rises in the East and sets in the West.

    The poets say I am his preeminent bard

  39. وسواي في الشُّعراء عن ممدوحه

    راوٍ بمثل حديثه لا يوثق

    Unequalled in singing his glorious deeds.

    For him I sang, adorned with his beauty.

  40. غرَّدت فيه مطوَّقاً بجميله

    إنَّ الحمام كما علمت مطوق

    You know the dove is always adorned.

    I spoke truthfully with eloquent voice

  41. أنبأت عنه وكنت أصدق لهجة

    ويسرّني أني أقول فأصدق

    And it pleased me to speak truth.

    News of timeless glory told by a speaker

  42. نبأٌ عن المجد الأَثيل ومنبئٌ

    تصغي إليه أُذُنُ الزَّمان فيطرق

    Whose voice makes the age bow down in awe.

    If the braggart night challenged him

  43. لو بارز الليل البهيم أعانه

    من صبح غرَّته عليه فيلق

    Dawn would shame it and tear its cloak.

    With the grip of a young lion

  44. يسطو على الأَرزاء سطوة ضيغمٍ

    إحدى براثنه السنان الأَزرق

    Jaws and claws both cerulean.

    Fighting however he wishes, rising high,

  45. متصرّف في البأس حيث وجدته

    ما زالَ يفتق ما يشاء ويرتق

    Vanquishing all as he desires.

    Meeting him or receiving his gifts

  46. ويروق عند لقائه وعطائه

    غيث يصوب وبارق يتألَّق

    Is like rain pouring and lightning striking.

    Those he pardons live in gardens

  47. فكأنَّما العافون منه بروضة

    أنهارها من كفِّه تتدفَّق

    Watered from his hands in streams.

    See how free men are slaves to him

  48. فانظر إلى الأَحرار وهي عبيده

    بالبرِّ إلاَّ أنَّها لا تُعتَق

    In goodness, though not emancipated.

    He created beauty in his essence

  49. خلق الجميل بذاته لوجوده

    خلقاً وها هو في سواه تَخَلُّقُ

    And now manifests it in all things.

    Generous in hardship and ease alike

  50. كرم على عسر الزَّمان ويسره

    لا يستقرُّ المال حتَّى ينفق

    Wealth does not rest till he spends it.

    God spared me the need for their protection -

  51. ولقد كفاني الله فيه عصابة

    لا أرتجيهم أبرقوا أم أرعدوا

    Be they defiant or subservient.

    God knows you are above them in rank,

  52. واللهُ يعلم أنَّ قدرك فوقهم

    وعلاك في جوِّ السَّماء مُحَلِّقُ

    Soaring high in the heavenly sphere.

    O you who wear the mantle of leadership and nobility,

  53. يا لابساً بُرْدَ الأُبوَّة والعُلى

    أرج الثناء بطيِّ بردك يعبق

    Your fragrant cloak makes praise flourish.

    What glories and virtues you possess!

  54. فلكم يضوع مكارماً ومفاخراً

    يحيا بطيب أريجه المستنشقُ

    The breath of their fragrance gives life.

    No eyes have seen your equal before

  55. لم تبصرِ العينان مثلك لاحقاً

    للأَوَّلين وسابقاً لا يُلحق

    Among past or future generations.

    You have revived extinguished glory.

  56. أحييتَ مجداً رمّ بعد فنائه

    فالمجد حيٌّ في حياتك يرزق

    Glory lives on in your life, sustained.

    I ransom you from all displeasure -

  57. تفديك ممَّا تشتكيه من الأَذى

    خَلقٌ وددت لوَ انَّهم لم يخلقوا

    Men I wish had never been created.

    You are graced to perform fair deeds,

  58. وُفِّقت للفعل الجميل وصنعه

    إنَّ الموفّق للجميل موفَّق

    For gracious deeds are doubly graced.

    Every ambitious person seeks your bounty,

  59. فسعى إلى جدواك كلُّ مؤمَّلٍ

    باب المواهب دونه لا يغلق

    Your door of gifts is never closed.

    Tongues thank you, finding sweet

  60. تملي عليك الشكر ألسِنةٌ لها

    يحلو لها لفظ ويعذب منطق

    Your words and enchanting your speech.
