1. هل تركتم غير الجوى لفؤادي

    أو كحلتم عيني بغير السُّهاد

    Have you left my heart naught but torment,

    Or reddened my eyes with aught but wakefulness?

  2. قد بعدتم عن أعين فهي غرقى

    بدموعي ولي فؤادٌ صادي

    You've gone far from my eyes and so they overflow

    With my tears, while my heart cries out.

  3. ثم وكّلتم السهاد عليها

    يمنع العين عن لذيذ الرقاد

    Then you left wakefulness in charge of them -

    To prevent the eyes from sweet slumber.

  4. مَن مجيري من الأحبة يجفون

    وتعدو منهم عليَّ الغوادي

    Who will protect me from loved ones who spurn me,

    As their estrangements press hard upon me?

  5. علموا أنني عليل ومن لي

    أن أرى طيفهم من العواد

    They knew I was ill, yet none of them

    Came to visit me - not one!

  6. نزلوا وادي الغضا فكأن ال

    دمع مني سيول ذاك الوادي

    They went down to the valley of estrangement, so it seems

    No tears will flow from me into that valley.

  7. تركتني أظعانهم يوم بانوا

    وحدا فيهم من البين حادي

    Their reproaches left me, when they turned away,

    Alone amidst them, a lost wanderer.

  8. بين دمع على المنازل موقو

    فٍ وشمل مشتت بالبعاد

    Between tears shed over the dwellings, pausing,

    And a cloak torn apart by separation.

  9. وفؤاد يروعه كل يوم

    ذكر أيامنا الحسان الجياد

    And a heart startled each day

    By memories of our days of joy and vigor.

  10. يا رفيقي وأين عهدك بالجزَع

    سقاه الغمام صوب عهاد

    O my companion! What of your pledge not to grieve?

    Watered by the clouds in the direction of cisterns.

  11. وسقت دارنا بميثاء مزن

    من ذوات الإبراق والإرعاد

    And I watered our home with a pouring rain,

    Full of flashing light and thunder.

  12. تتلظى كأنَّما أوْقَدَتْها

    زفراتي بحرّها الوقاد

    As if my sighs had kindled it

    With their burning embers.

  13. فتظنّ البروق منها سيوفاً

    مذهبات سُلَّت من الأغماد

    So the lightning seemed like polished swords

    Unsheathed from their scabbards.

  14. موقراتٍ بما حملن من الماء

    رواءً إلى الديار الصوادي

    Honoring what they carried of water

    As a gift for the barren home.

  15. ملقيات أثقالها باذلات

    ما لديها على الرُّبا والوهاد

    Shedding their burdens generously

    Of all they possessed, upon hills and plains.

  16. فترى الروض شاكراً من نداها

    نعمة بالأزهار والأوراد

    So you see the garden thanking them for their gift

    Of flowers and greenery.

  17. تتوالى على ملاعبَ للِغز

    لان فيها ومصرع الآساد

    Succeeding upon the playgrounds of gazelles

    Frolicking joyfully amidst the lions.

  18. أربعٍ كلَّما وقفت عليها

    كانَ طرفي فيها من الأجواد

    Whenever I paused before them

    My eyes were the most generous of hosts.

  19. ومناخٍ لنا يريق من الأجفان

    غير الذي تريق الغوادي

    And halting places for us where tears fell

    Other than those the valleys shed.

  20. فلنا فيه ما لهذي المطايا

    حرقة في القلوب والأكباد

    For we have in them what burns

    The hearts and livers of these noble steeds.

  21. كنت أرجو برداً من الوجد لكن

    ما لحر الغرام من إبراد

    I had hoped for coolness from passion, but

    No cooling can quench the heat of love.

  22. إنَّ في الظاعنين أبناءَ ودٍّ

    لم يراعوا في الود عهد ودادي

    Among the reproachers are dear friends

    Who did not heed the ties of affection.

  23. أين ميعاد من هَوِيت هواه

    ومتى نلتقي على ميعاد

    Where is the tryst with my beloved?

    When shall we meet at the appointed time?

  24. وتمادى هذا الجفاء وما هذا

    التجافي منه وهذا التمادي

    This estrangement has gone on too long What is this aloofness and distance from him?

    I see no justice from fate, though it spites me,

  25. لا أرى الدهر باسماً أو أراني

    بعد رغم المنى أنوف الأعادي

    In the face of my wishes, to favor enemies.

    Yearning, in Abul Thana's praise, praise

  26. منشداً في أبي الثناء ثناءً

    خالد الذكر دائم الإنشاد

    Eternal in renown, enduring in song.

    How often we sought him out with ode -

  27. كم قصدناه بالقصيد وما زا

    ل من الناس كعبة القصاد

    Yet no people succeeded like the archers.

    And we found in him a sweetness of speech,

  28. ووردنا بحراً طمى وأُفيضت

    من أياديه للأنام الأيادي

    At which the envious were sorely vexed.

    In a eloquence whose sharpness

  29. ووجدنا منه حلاوة لفظ

    شق فيها مرائر الحساد

    Struck the heads of unbelief with firm smites.

    So when his hands blackened a book

  30. في لسان بحدِّهِ قد رمى

    رؤوس الإلحاد بالأعضاد

    The brilliance of the Most High shone in that blackness.

    And the clear morning light of truth shone

  31. فإذا سوّدت يداه كتاباً

    فبياض العلى بذاك السواد

    Out of the blackness of that ink.

    Knowing the goals from their origins,

  32. وصباح الحق المبين لعيني

    ينجلي من سواد ذاك المداد

    And the ends of all things, their consummations.

    And when the Muslims sought his guidance,

  33. عارف بالغايات من مبتدأها

    ولغايات كل شيء مبادي

    He was the Imam to guide them.

    Warning with verses from the path of error,

  34. وإذا المسلمون رامت هداها

    كانَ من بينها الإمام الهادي

    And guiding to the road of right guidance.

    Heir to the knowledge of his grandfather, Master of Messengers,

  35. زاجر بالآيات عن منهج الغيّ

    ومهدي إلى سبيل الرشاد

    And the secret of fathers passed on to sons.

    He revived the nobility of great ancestors

  36. وارثٌ علم جده سيد الر

    سل وسر الآباء في الأولاد

    And the glory of noble forebears.

    Your eloquence prevails in every discourse,

  37. سؤدد في الأماجد السادة ال

    غر قديماً والسادة الأمجاد

    Like the strikes of a sword on the day of battle.

    These lands were blessed by his valor

  38. فاتك بالكلام في كل بحث

    فتكات الحسام يوم جلاد

    And excellence - none like him in any land!

    Gatherer of sciences, multiplying refinements,

  39. سعدت هذه البلاد بشهم

    عزّ وجدان مثله في البلاد

    Singular in merit, unique in oneness.

    He attained what none other attained,

  40. جامع للعلوم شفع المعالي

    مفرد الفضل واحد الآحاد

    And picked fruits of hope beyond reach of gatherers.

    Rhymes tell of his sublime traits,

  41. نال ما لم ينل سواه ومن

    دون ورد الآمال خرط القتاد

    Authentic narrations, strong in transmission.

    How can we enumerate all you comprise?

  42. والقوافي تروي أحاديث عل

    ياه صِحاحاً قويّة الإسناد

    Can stars be counted by astronomical calculations?

    If we listed your virtues, O people,

  43. كيف نحصي ما قد حويت وهل

    تحصى نجوم السماء بالأرصاد

    We would fail, for numbers have no end.

    O pillar of upright religion! Never

  44. إن تُعدد مناقباً لك قوم

    عجزت عن نهاية الأعداد

    Ceasing to be magnificent in build, lofty in pillar.

    You are God's sign for all people

  45. يا عماد الدِّين القويم وما زل

    ت عظيم البنا رفيع العماد

    And a mercy for worshipers.

    In Baghdad, where you resided,

  46. إنَّما أنت آية الله للنا

    س جميعاً ورحمة للعباد

    Is the praiseworthy station in Baghdad.

    I have not ceased to hope for you in this life,

  47. وببغداد ما حللت مقيماً

    فالمقام المحمود في بغداد

    And hope for you in the next life thereafter.

    I am, beyond all others, needless of creatures,

  48. لم أزل أرتجيك في هذه الد

    نيا وأرجوك بعدها في المعاد

    And have no need to hope in ascetics.

    Favors have garlanded me from you, and your bounty

  49. أنا عمّا سواك أغنى البرايا

    ولما يُرتجَ من الزهاد

    Is like necklaces upon noble steeds.

    Acts of kindness from you have drowned me -

  50. طوقتني النعماء منك ونعما

    ؤك مثل الأطواق في الأجياد

    O generous ancestor, O glorious forefathers!

    I have obtained all I desired

  51. غمرتني مكارم منك تترى

    يا كريم الآباء والأجداد

    From your nobility, and attained every wish

    From your open hand - and so

  52. نائل من علاك كل مرام

    بالغ من نداك كل مراد

    I have gained the reward of fasting and celebration.

    Every feast has dawned upon you anew,

  53. حزت أجر الصيام والعيد وافا

    ك بما تشتهي بخير معاد

    For it is a feast of the noblest feasts.

  54. كل عيد عليك عاد جديداً

    فهو عيد من أشرف الأعياد
