1. ما قَضى إلاَّ على الصّبِّ العميدِ

    وغدا يعثر في ذَيل الصُّدود

    He ruled only over the steadfast elderly,

    And tomorrow he stumbles on the tail of obstacles.

  2. رشأٌ يقتنص الأُسْدَ ومَن

    علَّمَ الظبي اقتناصاً للأُسود

    A youngster who hunts lions, and who

    Taught the deer to hunt lions.

  3. بأبي الشادن يرنو طرفه

    بلحاظٍ كلحاظ الرِّيم سود

    With my father Al-Shaden, his glance

    Has the glance of an aimer, pure black.

  4. ما أُلاقي من سيوفٍ وقناً

    ما أُلاقي من عيونٍ وقدود

    I do not meet swords and spears

    I do not meet eyes and melting flames.

  5. ويحَ قلبٍ لَعِبَ الشَّوقُ به

    من عيون بابليَّات وجيد

    Oh a heart that desire played with,

    Of the eyes of Babylonian women and neck.

  6. ربَّ طيفٍ من زَرودٍ زارني

    فسقى صوبُ الحيا عهدَ زرود

    The phantom of a delicate one visited me

    So he quenched the covenant of youth near life.

  7. فتذكَّرتُ زماناً مرَّ بي

    طرب النشوة مرعيَّ العهود

    I remembered a time that passed me

    The delight of ecstasy, the shepherd of covenants.

  8. وبعيد الدَّار في ذاك الحمى

    من فؤادي في الهوى غير بعيد

    And my faraway home during that fever

    Is not far in passion from my heart.

  9. يا دموعي روِّضي الخدَّ ويا

    حرَّ نيران الجوى هل من مزيد

    Oh my tears, soothe my cheek, oh

    Heat of passion, is there any increase?

  10. أين أيَّامُ الهوى من رامة

    يا لياليها رعاك الله عودي

    Where are the days of love from Rama?

    Oh its nights, may God protect you, come back.

  11. وبكاء المزن في أرجائها

    وابتسام الراح عن درٍّ نضيد

    And the tears of the cloud in its corners

    And the smile of comfort over scattered pearls.

  12. قَذَفَتْ أنجُمُها كأسَ الطلا

    كلّ شيطانٍ من الهمِّ مريد

    Its stars tossed the cup of dissolution

    Every defiant devil of worries as an aspirant.

  13. فأَدِرْها قهوةً عاديَّةً

    عُصِرَت في عهد عادٍ وثمود

    So turn it into a customary coffee

    Pressed in the time of ‘Aad and Thamud.

  14. أيُّها السَّاقي وَهَبْ لي قُبلةً

    هبةً منك بإحسان وجود

    Oh you the pourer, grant me a kiss

    A gift from you in kindness and existence.

  15. أنا لا أَشرَبُها إلاَّ على

    أُقحوانِ الثَّغر أو وَرْدِ الخدود

    I don’t drink it except over

    The roses of the mouth or the apples of the cheek.

  16. وبفيك المورد العذب الَّذي

    أرتوي منه ومن لي بالورود

    And through your sweet spring that

    I quench my thirst and who has roses for me?

  17. وبقلبي نارُ خَدَّيْك الَّتي

    لم تزل في مهجتي ذات الوقود

    And the fire of your cheek that

    Has not ceased to have burning wood in my viscera.

  18. من معيد لي زماناً قد مضى

    بمذاب التِّبر في الماء الجَمود

    Who can return me a time that has passed

    With the melted amber in solid water?

  19. دارتِ الأَقداح فيها طَرَباً

    من يَدَيْ أَحوى ومن حسناءَ رود

    The cups circulated in it out of rapture

    From the hand of a lover and from a beautiful gazelle.

  20. وكأنَّ الكأس في توريدها

    قُطِفَتْ واعْتُصِرَتْ من خدِّ خود

    And as if the cup in her pouring

    Was plucked and squeezed from the cheek of a fawn.

  21. في رياض غرَّدت ورقاؤها

    بفنون السَّجع منها والنشيد

    In gardens whose foliage sang

    With prose and poetry from it.

  22. وغصون البان في ريح الصبا

    تنثني بين ركوع وسجود

    And the myrtle branches in the wind of morning breeze

    Bending between bowing and prostration.

  23. فسقى تلك المغاني عارضٌ

    مستطيرُ البَرقِ مِهدارُ الرُّعود

    So a crescent-faced one quenched that singing

    Swift lightning, rumbling thunder.

  24. كانت الجنَّة إلاَّ أنَّها

    لم تكن حينئذٍ دار الخلود

    It would have been paradise except

    It was not then the abode of immortality.

  25. في ليالٍ أشْبَهَتْ ظلماؤها

    بدخانٍ كانَ من ندٍّ وعود

    On nights whose darkness resembled

    Smoke that was from burning wood.

  26. وكأَنَّ الأَنجُمَ الزّهر بها

    أَعيُنٌ من وجدها غير رقود

    And as if the stars in it were

    Eyes of an onlooker, not sleeping.

  27. وكأَنَّ البدرَ فيها مَلِكٌ

    حُفَّ بالموكب منها والجنود

    And as if the moon in it was

    A king, surrounded by procession and soldiers.

  28. وكأَنَّ الصُّبْحَ في إثر الدُّجى

    طائرٌ يركض في إثر طريد

    And as if the dawn after the darkness

    A bird running after prey.

  29. رقَّ فيه الجوُّ حتَّى خِلتَه

    رقَّةَ القاضي بنا عبد الحميد

    The atmosphere softened until its softness

    Was the softness of Judge Ibn Abdelhameed.

  30. لَطُفَتْ أخلاقُه وابْتَهَجَتْ

    كابتهاج الرَّوض يزهو بالورود

    His morals were refined and delighted

    Like the delight of a meadow blooming with roses.

  31. إنَّ من يأوي إلى أحكامه

    إنَّما يأوي إلى ركن شديد

    Indeed whoever comes to his rulings

    Comes to a strong pillar.

  32. عادلٌ في الحكم يمضي حكمه

    بقضاء الرّبّ ما بين العبيد

    Just in ruling, his judgment passes

    With the decree of the Lord between the slaves.

  33. كلَّما كرَّرْتُ فيه نظراً

    رَمَقَتْني منه أَلحاظُ الورود

    Whenever I glance at him

    The gazes of roses wink at me from him.

  34. حجَّتي فيه الأَيادي والنَّدى

    وجميل الصّنع بالخلق الحميد

    My proof of him is favors and dew

    And good deed with the righteous people.

  35. وشهودي من مزاياه ولا

    تثبت الحجَّةُ إلاَّ بالشُّهود

    And my witnesses are his merits, and proof is not upheld

    Except through witnesses.

  36. قمرٌ في المجد يكسوه السَّنا

    شرف الآباء منه والجدود

    A moon in glory, dressed in

    The honor of forefathers and ancestors.

  37. وافرُ الجود يدا آملِهِ

    إنَّما تغرف من بحرٍ مديد

    Abundant in generosity, his hopeful hand

    Is a sea that pours without end.

  38. ذو نوالٍ مستباح نيلُه

    من مُنيلٍ ومراد لمريد

    With accessible fortune, attaining it

    From a pourer and purpose for the seeker.

  39. عالم فيه لنا فائدة

    فجزى الله مفيد المستفيد

    A scholar in whom is benefit for us

    So may God reward the beneficial to the benefiting.

  40. أَلمعيٌّ ناظرٌ في بَصَرٍ

    في خوافي غامضِ الأَمر حديد

    Shining, looking with insightful vision

    Into the obscure of the matter, decisive.

  41. وبما في ذاته من هِمَمٍ

    كلّما تُرْهَفُ أَزْرَتْ بالحديد

    And with the ambitions in his being

    Whenever scrutinized, glistened with steel.

  42. شَرَحَتْ معنى معاليه لنا

    فهيَ لا تخفى على غير البليد

    His sublime meanings were explained to us

    Which cannot be hidden from other than the stupid.

  43. وأَرَتْنا منه في أَقرانه

    مُفْرداً يغني عن الجمع العديد

    And he showed us among his peers

    Singular, sufficient instead of the many.

  44. شرعةُ الدِّين ومنهاج الهُدى

    قائمٌ بالقسط مجريُّ الحدود

    Upholder of the way of religion and guidance

    Executing justice, maintainer of limits.

  45. حاملٌ للحقِّ سيفاً خاضعٌ

    لمضاه كلُّ جبَّار عنيد

    Bearer of truth, sword-yielding, submissive

    To the Creator, every stubborn tyrant humbled.

  46. يُرتجى أو يُختشى في حدِّه

    مُؤْنِسُ الوعد وإيحاش الوعيد

    In his limit, hoped for or feared

    Comforting in promise and deterring in threat.

  47. وَعَدَتْني منه آمالي به

    فوَفَتْ لي بعد حَوْلٍ بالوعود

    He promised me hopes through him

    And fulfilled after a year with promises.

  48. فحمِدْتُ الله لما أنْ بدا

    طالعاً كالبدر في برج السعود

    So I praised God when there emerged

    A rising like the full moon in the constellation of good fortune.

  49. عاد للمنصب قاضٍ لم يزل

    كلّ يومٍ هو في عيد سعيد

    Returned to position, a judge who never ceased to be

    Every day in a holiday of happiness.

  50. وبفضل الله يعلو مجده

    فتعالى الله ذو العرش المجيد

    And by the grace of God, his glory rises

    So Glorified is God, Lord of the Magnificent Throne.

  51. يا عماد المجد في المجد ويا

    دُرَّة التَّاج ويا بيت القصيد

    Oh pillar of glory in glory, oh

    Pearl of the crown, oh house of the ode.

  52. دمتَ في العالم عطرياً الشذا

    دائمَ النعمة مَكبوتَ الحسود

    You remain in the world a fragrant aroma

    Permanent in blessing, oppressed by envy.

  53. يا لك الله فتًى من مُبدِئٍ

    بالندى والفضل فينا ومعيد

    Oh God grant you, a youth from the start

    With dew and favor among us and repeat.

  54. وقوافيَّ الَّتي أُنشِدُها

    نُظِمتْ في مدحه نظم العقود

    And the rhymes I recite in his praise

    Were composed in eulogy like necklaces.

  55. أَطلَقَتْ فيه لساني أَنعُمٌ

    قيَّدَتْني من عُلاه بقيود

    Favors unleashed my tongue, luxuries

    Restrained me from his sublimity with shackles.

  56. أَنا لولا صيِّبٌ من سَيْبِه

    ما ارتوى غُصْني ولا أَورَقَ عودي

    I, were it not for a shower from his clouds

    My branch would not have quenched nor would my peg blossom.
