1. دعاه إلى الهوى داعي التّصابي

    فراح يذكر أيّام الشباب

    The caller to passion called him,

    So he began recalling the days of youth,

  2. يذيل مدامعاً قد أرسَلَتها

    لواعج فرط حزن واكتئاب

    Shedding tears that had been released

    By a grieving heart, depressed and anxious.

  3. وأبصره العذول كما تراه

    بما قاسى شديد الاضطراب

    The bachelor saw him as you see him,

    Suffering from extreme distress.

  4. وفي أحشائه وجدٌ كمينٌ

    يعذّبه بأنواع العذاب

    Within him lies hidden

    A torment that pains him in various ways.

  5. فلام ولم يُصِب باللّوم رشداً

    وكان العذر أهدى للصواب

    So he blamed and reproached him not,

    For forgiveness was more rightly guided.

  6. جفته الغانيات وقد جفاها

    فلا وصل من البيض الكعاب

    The singing girls abandoned him, though he'd abandoned them,

    So neither whiteness nor darkness remained.

  7. وكان يروعه من قبل هذا

    هوى سلمى وزينب والرباب

    Even before this, the love of Salma, Zainab and Rabab

    Terrified him.

  8. يروع إلى الدمى صابٍ إليها

    ويأنس في أوانها العراب

    He turns to the tender one, devoted to her,

    Finding comfort in her time of dusk.

  9. أعيدي النَّوح يا ورقاء حتَّى

    كأنَّكِ قد شكوتكِ بعض ما بي

    Repeat your wailing, O Warqa, as if

    You complained to me of some of my deeds.

  10. بكيت وما بكيت لفقد إلفٍ

    على أني أصبتُ ولم تُصابي

    You cried but did not cry for loss of a friend;

    Rather, I was hurt while you were spared.

  11. وذكّرني وميض البرق ثغراً

    برود الشرب خمري الرضاب

    The lightning's gleam reminded me of a mouth

    Whose cool drink was my wine of flagellation.

  12. وما أظمأك يا كبدي غليلاً

    إلى رشف الثنايات العذاب

    No thirst has left my liver wanting

    For a sip of the tender girl's torment.

  13. أتنسى يا هذيم غداة عُجنا

    على ربع نهاب للذهاب

    Do you forget, O Hudhaym, the morning we stopped

    At the abode of slipping away?

  14. فَأوْقَفْنا المطيَّ على رسوم

    كآثار الكتاب من الكتاب

    So we halted the camel at traces

    Like the ruins of scripture from scripture,

  15. وأطلال لميَّةَ باليات

    بكت أطلالَها مقلُ السحاب

    And the ruins of Layla the devastated,

    Whose ruins the clouds wept over.

  16. نسائلها عن النائين عنها

    فتعجز يا هذيم عن الجواب

    I asked about those long gone from it,

    But it was silenced, O Hudhaym, lacking all answer.

  17. هنالك كانت العبرات منا

    خضاباً أو تنوب عن الخضاب

    Our tears there became like kohl,

    Or taking the place of kohl.

  18. أُمني النفس بعد ذهاب قومي

    بما يرجو المفارق من إياب

    After my people went away, my soul wished

    For what the departed hopes will come back.

  19. ذريني يا أميم من الأماني

    فما كانت خلا وعد كذاب

    Leave me, O Umayma, to my wishes,

    For they were nothing but a lying promise.

  20. ذريني أصحب الفلوات إنِّي

    رأيتُ الجدَّ أوفقَ بالطلاب

    Leave me to roam the wilderness, for I

    Saw seriousness is best for seekers.

  21. فما لي يا أميمة في خمول

    يطول به مع الدنيا عتابي

    So why, O Umayma, do I persist in despondency,

    Prolonging with the world my complaints?

  22. سقيم بين ظهراني أناسٍ

    أروم بهم شراباً من سراب

    I am sick among folk

    Whose company I wish for like a mirage,

  23. يجنّبني نداهم صَون عرضي

    وتركي للدنيّة واجتنابي

    Whose nearness spares my honor

    And leaves me to baseness and avoidance.

  24. وكم لي فيهمُ من قارصات

    وما نفدت سهام من جعابي

    How many piercing arrows I have

    And yet my quiver of arrows is not depleted!

  25. سأرسلها وإنْ كانت حثياً

    عليها من أباة الضيم آبي

    I will unleash them, though they're unsteady,

    With the obstinacy of one wronged who refuses.

  26. وإنّي مثلما عَلِمَتْ سُعادٌ

    وقورُ الجأش مِقْلاقُ الركاب

    I am like the auspicious Mount Sa'd,

    With dignity and heavily-stomping ships.

  27. وأدَّرع القتام لكلّ هول

    كما أغمدت سيفاً في قراب

    I arm myself with coats of mail against every horror,

    Sheathing a sword in its scabbard.

  28. وأصحبُ كلّ مُبْيضّ السجايا

    وجنح الليل مسودّ الإهاب

    I accompany all who whiten reputations

    And whose protective covering is the night's wing,

  29. ليأخذ من أحاديثي حديثاً

    غنياً عن معاطاة الشراب

    Who take from my discourse a saying

    Independent of the consumption of wine,

  30. بمدح محمَّدٍ ربّ المعالي

    ورائق صفوة الحسب اللباب

    Praising Muhammad, Lord of the Exalted,

    And the choice of the sensible elite's drink.

  31. وها أنا لا أزال الدهر أثني

    عليه بالثناء المستطاب

    With delightful praise.

    I am enraptured by it, not the rapture of songs

  32. فأطرب فيه لا طرب الأغاني

    وكأس الراح ترقص بالحباب

    And cups of wine dancing with bubbles.

    When the resolute rider travels his round,

  33. إذا دارٌ نَبتْ بي رحَّلَتها

    عزائم باسل عالي الجناب

    With lofty determination,

    I embellish the verse of poems with his name

  34. أطرّزُ باسمه بُرْدَ القوافي

    كوشي البرد طرز بالذهاب

    Like embroidery on the brocade of departure.

    Through him do our needs descend upon us

  35. وفيه تنزل الحاجات منا

    وتنزل في منازله الرحاب

    And in his courtyards descend the vastness.

    If hope turns to him, it finds

  36. إذا آب الرجاءُ إليه لاقى

    بساحة مجده حسن المآب

    In the realm of his glory, fair success.

    He is humble, though lofty in worth, transcendent,

  37. تواضع وهو عالي القدر سامٍ

    ولا عجبٌ هو ابنُ أبي تراب

    And no wonder! He is the son of Father Dust.

    Noble among the illustrious house

  38. شريف من ذؤابة آل بيتٍ

    براء في الدنا من كل عاب

    Of Zawba'a, pure of all faults.

    When I draw near him, he brings me honor;

  39. يشرفني إذا أدنيت منه

    دنوّي من علائي واقترابي

    My approaching him raises me high.

    And between us - though kinship is glory -

  40. وفيما بيننا والفضل قربى

    من العرفان والنسب القراب

    Is the bond of knowledge and blood ties.

    I rave in praising him in every valley,

  41. أهيم بمدحه في كل وادٍ

    وأقرع في ثناه كل باب

    And emaciate myself praising him at every gate,

    To his noble presence paying tribute

  42. إلى حضراته الأمداح تجبى

    ومن ثم انتَمى فيها لجابي

    And from there I made praising him my habit.

    His generosity makes the virtuous covet him

  43. يرغّب فضله الفضلاء فيه

    ويطمعهم بأيديه الرغاب

    And hope for his open-handedness.

    Gifts that no request can surpass,

  44. عطاء ليس يسبقه مطال

    وقد يعطي الكثير بلا حساب

    He may bestow abundantly beyond measure.

    He spends wealth in God's path

  45. وينفق في سبيل الله مالاً

    لأبناء السبيل وفي الرقاب

    For wayfarers and slaves.

    May God reward the Excellent Minister for us

  46. جزى الله الوزير الخير عنا

    وأجزاه بأضعاف الثواب

    And recompense him manifold.

    He brought Iraq and its people joy

  47. فقد سَرَّ العراقَ ومن عليها

    بقاضٍ لا يروغ ولا يحابي

    With an unswerving, unbiased judge.

    And may God maintain for Islam a Sheikh

  48. وأبقى الله للإسلام شيخاً

    به دفع المصاب عن المصاب

    Who repels calamity from the stricken,

    With the likes of his governance resolving issues

  49. بمثل قضائه فصل القضايا

    ومثل خطابه فصل الخطاب

    And the likes of his authority deciding speech,

    From the folk who have ascended and led

  50. من القوم الذين عَلَوْا وسادوا

    كما تعلو الرؤوس على الذناب

    As heads are raised over tails.

    They have looked with loftiness over the lands

  51. أطلّوا بالعلاء على البرايا

    كما طلّ الجبال على الروابي

    As mountains look over the hilltops.

    It will bring you joy, O Baghdad, to have him,

  52. ليهنك أنت يا بغداد منه

    بطلعة حسن مرجوٍ مهاب

    With the radiant expectation of his awe.

    He established justice in Zurra’ so that

  53. أقام العدل في الزوراء حتَّى

    وجدنا الشاء يأنس بالذئاب

    We found sheep friendly with wolves.

    How could truth not be obeyed there

  54. وأنى لا يطاع الحق فيها

    ولا تجري الأمور على الصواب

    Or affairs not proceed properly?

    The sword of God is in a Hashimite’s hand,

  55. وسيف الله في يد هاشميّ

    صقال المتن مشحوذ الذباب

    Its blade sharpened and ready.

    Your departure from Damascus of Syria resembled

  56. خروجك من دمشق الشام ضاهى

    خروج العضب أصلت للضراب

    The rising of the Pleiades, poised to strike.

    You came in a torrential flood until

  57. وجئت مجيء سيل الطمّ حتَّى

    لقد بلغ الروابي والزوابي

    You reached even the highlands and groves,

    With knowledge from you, stirring of torrents,

  58. بعلم منك زخّار العباب

    وفضل منك ملآن الوطاب

    And favor from you, filling valleys.

    From this and this together

  59. فمن هذا ومن هذا جميعاً

    أتيت الناس بالعجب العجاب

    You brought people shocking wonders.

    And people, my master, began praying

  60. وراح الناس يا مولاي تدعو

    لعزك بالدعاء المستجاب

    For your might with answered prayers.

    May your stars never set in the west,

  61. فلا أفلتْ نجومك في مغيب

    ولا حُجِبَتْ شموسُك في ضباب

    Nor your suns be veiled in clouds.
