1. ليالينا على الجرعاء عودي

    بماضي العيش للصَّيب العميدِ

    Our nights in the place of Al-Jar'aa, return

    With the life of the past, to the dignified young man,

  2. بحيث منازلُ الأحباب تزهو

    ونظمُ الشمل كالدر النضيد

    Where the abodes of loved ones flourish,

    And the gathering is like threaded pearls,

  3. وفي تلك المنازل لا عداها

    حَياً ينهلّ من ذات الرعود

    And in those abodes, nothing else,

    A living life that drinks from the same lightning,

  4. مسارح للمها يسخن فيها

    وإنْ كانتْ مرابضَ للأسود

    Theaters where passion is heated,

    Even if they are the dens of lions,

  5. تعلَّقها هوى قيسٍ لليلى

    سوانح ربرب وقطيع غيد

    Attached by the love of Qais for Layla,

    Swallows twittering and a flock of doves,

  6. هنالك تفتك اللحظات منها

    وتنتسب الرماح إلى القدود

    There the glances glean from them

    And spears trace back to the beautiful one,

  7. وكم في الحيّ من كبدٍ تَلَظّى

    وتَصْلى حَرَّ نيران الخدود

    And how much in life is a blazing liver,

    And it prays the heat of cheeks,

  8. ولما أنْ وقفْت بدار ميٍّ

    لذكر الماضيات من العهود

    And when I stood in the abode of Mayya,

    Remembering past covenants,

  9. نثرتُ بها دموع العين نثراً

    كما انتثر الجُمان من العقود

    I scattered the tears of my eyes scattering,

    As the pearls scattered from necklaces,

  10. وللركب المناخ بها حنينٌ

    حنينَ الفاقدين على الفقيد

    And the caravan had therein a yearning,

    The yearning of those who lost upon the lost one,

  11. سقتك بمستهلّ المزن قطرٌ

    ووشاك الحيا وشي البرود

    I gave you at the beginning of Sagittarius a drop,

    And clothed you with life and dressed you in cold,

  12. فأينَ ملاعب الغزلان فيها

    وصفو العيش في الزمن الرغيد

    So where are the playgrounds of gazelles in it?

    And the pleasure of living in the green age?

  13. وفي تلك الشفاه اللُّعس ريٍّ

    فوا ظمأ الفؤاد إلى الورود

    And in those eloquent lips, O would

    My heart quench its thirst unto roses!

  14. وما أنسى الإقامة في ظلالٍ

    على ماء من الوادي برود

    And I do not forget staying in the shadows

    Of water from the valley, it is cool,

  15. تُغَنّينا من الأوراق وُرْقٌ

    وتَشدونا على الغصن الميود

    Leaves sing to us,

    And branches inspire us to lean,

  16. وتُنْشِدُنا الهوى طرباً فنلهو

    وتُطْرِبُنا بذياك النشيد

    And passion sings to us a melody, so we amuse,

    And inspires us with that chant,

  17. لقد كانت ليالينا بجَمعٍ

    مكان الخال من وجنات خود

    Indeed, our nights were altogether

    A place devoid of sand dunes,

  18. أبيتُ ومَن أحبُّ وكأس راحٍ

    كذَوْب التّبر في الماءِ الجَمود

    I stayed and whom I love and a resting cup,

    Like the speckle in motionless water,

  19. وقد غنَّت فأعرَبَتِ الأغاني

    عن اللّذات من نايٍ وعود

    And songs were sung, expressing

    The pleasures of flute and lute,

  20. فما مالت إلى الفحشاء نفسٌ

    ولا ركنت إلى حسناء رود

    No soul inclined to obscenity,

    Nor a beauty settled to be rude,

  21. وما زالت بي الألحاظُ حتَّى

    ألانَتْ هذه الأيام عودي

    And my glances remained upon me,

    Until these days softened my firewood,

  22. ولم تملِك يمين الحرص نفسي

    ولا ألْوَتْ إلى الأطماع جيدي

    And the right hand of greed did not possess my soul,

    Nor did my hands extend to ambitions,

  23. وليلٍ قد لبست به دجاه

    بأردية من الظلماء سود

    And a night in which I wore its darkness,

    With a cloak of dark gloom,

  24. لِبيدٍ يَفْرَقُ الخرّيتُ فيها

    ولم أصْحَبْ سوى حَنَشٍ وسيد

    For a waste in which fodder is dispersed,

    And I accompanied only a brave and master,

  25. يجاوبني لديها الحتف نفسٌ

    فيلمَسُ ملمَس الصعد الشديد

    A soul meets me therein with death,

    Feeling the touch of rugged ascension,

  26. وتمنع جانبي بيضٌ شدادٌ

    ولي بأسٌ أشدُّ من الحديد

    And my side is prevented by firm white,

    And I have a might stronger than iron,

  27. وكم يوم ركبنا الفلك تطفو

    بسيطَ الماء في البحر المديد

    And how many days we rode the ships floating,

    On the plain of water in the outstretched sea,

  28. إذا عصفت بها ريحٌ هوت بي

    كما يهوي المُصلّي للسجود

    When a wind raged at it, it collapsed with me,

    As the praying one collapses to the ground,

  29. فآونةً تكون إلى هبوط

    وآونةً تكون إلى صعود

    Once it drops down,

    And once it ascends,

  30. ولولا اليوسُفان لما رمت بي

    مراميها إلى خطر مبيد

    And were it not for the two Josephs,

    Its purposes would not have thrown me to deadly danger,

  31. وقد أهوى الكويتَ وأنتحيها

    إلى مَغنى محمدها السعيد

    And it made me hope Al Kuwait and yearn it,

    To the harbor of its happy Muhammad,

  32. إذا طالعت بهجته أرَتْني

    مَطالعُها مطالعَ للسعود

    When I see its splendor, its risings show me,

    Risings of good fortune,

  33. أنامِلُه جداول للعطايا

    وبهجته رياضٌ للوفود

    Its fingers are streams of gifts,

    And its splendor is meadows of delegations,

  34. وأكرَمُ من غَدَتْ تُثني عليه

    بنو الدنيا بقافية شرود

    And I praise whom the people of the world eulogize,

    With rhyming of scattering,

  35. مفيدٌ كلّ ذي أمل وحاجٍ

    يَمُدُّ إليه راحة مستفيد

    Every hopeful and needy benefits,

    He extends to him rest, gaining,

  36. ومُنْتَجَعُ العُفاة ينالُ فيه

    مَكانةُ رفعة ومَنالُ جود

    And the naked take in it,

    A status of highness and gain of generosity,

  37. تَحُطُّ رحالَها فيه الأماني

    وتعنيه المدائح من بعيد

    Their hopes dismount in it,

    And praises aid it from afar,

  38. وتأوي كلَّما آوت إليه

    ومأواها إلى ركن شديد

    And every time they take shelter in it,

    Its shelter is to a firm pillar,

  39. فَتىً من عِقدِ ساداتٍ كرام

    يتيمةُ ذلك العقد الفريد

    A young man from a knot of generous nobles,

    The orphan of that unique knot,

  40. نَعِمتَ فتىً من الأشراف خِلاًّ

    فيا لله من خِلٍّ ودود

    You graced a young man from the finest stock,

    So what a fine affectionate companion!

  41. ولولا جودُه والفضلُ منه

    كما مَنَّ الوجودُ على وجودي

    And were it not for his generosity and grace,

    As existence favored my existence,

  42. مناقبُ في المعالي أورِثوها

    عن الآباء منهمْ والجدود

    Glories in the heights, his fathers inherited to him,

    From them and ancestors,

  43. أُسودُ مواطن الهيجاء قومٌ

    لهُم شَرَفُ العقول على الأُسود

    Lions of the abode of valor, a people

    Whom have the nobility of minds over lions,

  44. هو الشرف الَّذي يبدو سناه

    فيُخْضِعُ كلُّ جبار عنيد

    It is the nobility which appears aged,

    Subjugating every stubborn tyrant,

  45. ويخمد نورهم ناراً تلظى

    وكان الظنّ آبية الخمود

    And extinguishing their light a blazing fire,

    Though the assumption was the eternity of extinction,

  46. وما اعترف الجحود بها وفاقاً

    ولكنْ لا سبيل إلى الجحود

    And denial did not acknowledge it graciously,

    But there is no way to denial,

  47. رفاعيٌّ رفيعُ القدرِ سامٍ

    أبيٌّ راغمٌ أنْفَ الحسود

    High ranking, of high value, transcending,

    Defiant, forcing the envious,

  48. ومُبدي كلِّ مكرمةٍ معيدٌ

    فيا لله من مبدٍ معيد

    And initiating every honor, repeating,

    So what an honorable repeating initiator!

  49. مكارمُ منعم ونوالُ بَرٍّ

    غنيٌّ بالنجاز عن الوعود

    Kindness of a benefactor and obtaining good,

    Wealthy with achievements without promises,

  50. وما مَلَكَتْ يداه من طريف

    فلم تُضَع الجميلَ ومن تليد

    And his hands did not possess any subtlety,

    Without placing favor and whoever takes,

  51. عمودُ المجد من بيت المعالي

    وهل بيتُ يقوم بلا عمود

    The pillar of glory is from the house of glories,

    And does a house stand without a pillar?

  52. مَدَحْتُ سواه من نُقباء عصر

    فكنتُ كمن تَيَمَّم بالصعيد

    I praised others from the celebrities of an era,

    So I was like one who performed Tayamum with dust,

  53. ولُذْتُ به فَلُذْتُ إذن بظلٍّ

    يمدُّ ظلال جنات الخلود

    And I enjoyed him, so I enjoyed a shade,

    That casts shades of eternal gardens,

  54. ولستُ ببارحٍ عن باب قرم

    أقيّدُ من نداه في قيود

    And I do not stop at the door of Qurum,

    Tied from his softness in shackles,

  55. إذا جَرَّدْته عَضباً صقيلاً

    وقفتَ من الحديد على حديد

    If you unsheathe it angrily smooth,

    You would stand from iron upon iron,

  56. وإن ذكروا له خلقاً وخلقاً

    فَقُلْ ما شئت بالخلق الحميد

    And if they mentioned to him a character and character,

    Say what you want with the good character,

  57. إليك بعثْتُها أبيات شعر

    يَسيرُ بها الرسول مع البريد

    I sent it to you poetry verses,

    With which the messenger travels with the mail,

  58. كقطرِ المزن يسجم من نمير

    وروض المزن يبسم عن ورود

    Like a drop of Sagittarius dripping from dew,

    And the meadow of Sagittarius smiles from flowers,

  59. لئِنْ كانت بنو الدنيا قصيداً

    فإنّك بينَهُم بيتُ القصيد

    If the people of the world were a poem,

    You among them are the final verse of the poem.
