1. في كلّ يومٍ للمنون صَولةٌ

    فينا وخَطبٌ بالفراق فادحُ

    Each day death prowls

    Among us, with partings so painful.

  2. وزفرةٌ موصولةٌ بزفرةٍ

    ومدمعٌ على الخدود سافح

    Sigh follows sigh,

    Tears flow down cheeks.

  3. وحسرةٌ على الذين أصبَحَتْ

    تعلُوهم من الصَّفا صفائح

    Regret for those now

    Lying under gravestones.

  4. وأراهم التربُ وكانوا أنجُماً

    كما تضيء بالدُّجى مصابح

    I see them as stars

    Lighting up the darkness.

  5. وكلُّ يومٍ وَجْهُ خطبٍ كالحٍ

    وللخطوب أوْجهٌ كوالح

    Each day brings new sorrows,

    Sorrows bring more sorrows.

  6. نُدفَعُ بالرّغم إلى رزيَّةٍ

    محاسن الدُّنيا بها مقابح

    We’re driven to sadness

    Though worldly joys abound.

  7. نمزح بالدَّهر وذا صرف الرَّدى

    لا هازل فينا ولا ممازح

    We jest with fate though fate

    Brooks not our jesting.

  8. ونحنُ عنه أبداً في غفلةٍ

    تلهو كما يلهو البهيم السَّارح

    Always oblivious we,

    Like grazing beasts that roam.

  9. نوضح في اللَّهو لنا معذرة

    وما لنا في اللَّهو عذر واضح

    We feign excuses

    When no excuses exist.

  10. وفي المنايا للفتى روادع

    زواجرٌ عن غيّه نواصح

    Death warns the youth

    To curb his recklessness.

  11. لا يغفل الإِنسان عن مزلقة

    لو كانَ للإنسان عقلٌ راجح

    Man disregards the traps

    Though wise and knowing.

  12. يغتاله دون المنى حمامه

    وطرفه إلى الحمام طامح

    Death hunts him down

    While he aspires upward.

  13. أيجهل الأَمر على علمٍ به

    والجهل بالعاقل عَيبٌ فاضح

    Can one know yet feign ignorance?

    Ignorance shames the wise.

  14. يا رفعةً بقيت لي في رفعةٍ

    من دونها انحطَّ السّماك الرَّامح

    O Solace you remain exalted

    While lesser lights decline.

  15. إنِّي أُعَزِّيكَ بخالٍ قد خلا

    وما خلا منه اللِّسان المادح

    I console you with one departed

    Whose praise no tongues can find.

  16. وكلُّ من يرجو البقاء بعده

    فذاك غادٍ بعده ورائح

    He who hopes to live on after death

    Will vanish and depart.

  17. لا بدَّ أنْ تبكي عليه أَعيُنٌ

    وأنْ تنوحَ بعده النوايح

    Eyes must weep for him

    And dirges chant his loss.

  18. سقاه من وَبْل الغمام صيّبٌ

    تروى به الآكام والأَباطح

    The clouds gave him to drink

    Quenching plateau and dune.

  19. عَزَّيتُك اليوم به مُؤَرِّخاً

    لمَّا مضى إلى الجنان صالح

    Today I console you with one

    Who left us for the Gardens.
