1. بكتْ بدمٍ من بعد عيسى وبندر

    عيونُ ذوي الحاجات من كلِّ معشر

    With blood they wept for Bander after Jesus,

    The eyes of the needy from every tribe.

  2. وأهرقت الدمع الغزير عليهما

    لواعج حزن في الجوانح مضمر

    They shed copious tears over them,

    Sorrows of grief simmering in their breasts.

  3. فلم تبق منه زفرة ما تأجَّجت

    ولا عبرة من مقلة لم تحدّر

    No sigh remained that was not ignited,

    No teardrop from an eyelid that did not flow.

  4. أقول لركب راح يرتاد منزلاً

    لربع على نهر المجرّة مقفر

    I say to a caravan on its way

    To an empty quarter in the Milky Way.

  5. سرى ضارباً في الأرض ما بين منجد

    يخدّ أخاديد الفلاة ومغور

    Traveling the land between Munjid

    And the ravines of the wilderness and caves.

  6. أقيموا على قبر ثوى فيه بندر

    صدور المطايا ما ثوى قبر بندر

    Stand over the grave where Bander lies,

    The chests of steeds where the grave of Bander lies.

  7. ولا تسأموا من واكف الدمع وافرجوا

    من الحزن مبيض الدموع بأحمر

    Do not weary of abundant flowing tears, let

    Sorrow’s tears with crimson overflow.

  8. ولا تندبوا غير المكارم والعلى

    لعالٍ كما صدر القناة مشهر

    Mourn nothing but the noble and sublime,

    Like the chest of the canal bared and drawn.

  9. بكيت فأكثرت البكاء وحقّ لي

    بكائي على وفد من العز مكثر

    It mocks the clouds' downpour with its floods,

    Swifter than the compelled clouds downpour.

  10. وإنِّي لمعذور إذا ما بكيته

    بأكثر من قطر الغمام وأغزر

    Every day restores my request from God

    Of a shred of honor that severs my reason.

  11. ولي عَبرة لم ترقا عند ادّكاره

    كما لي فيه عبرة المتفكر

    An affliction has befallen the family of Mohammed

    Despite the glory of Wushayj and Sumayri.

  12. وهيهات أنْ أسلو يوماُ وإنّني

    خلا منه يوماً خاطري وتذكري

    They were afflicted with a people never afflicted before,

    Not the red Hamra nor the clan of Khumayra.

  13. حسامٌ صقيل المتن أُغمِدَ في الثرى

    ووارى ترابُ الأرض طلعة نيّر

    Show us how death aims its arrows,

    And how disasters rage and break loose.

  14. وقد كانَ لم يحجب سناه بحاجب

    ولم تستتر أضواؤه بمستّر

    Had he been ransomable, glories would have ransomed him,

    Death sees only profit in him, no loss.

  15. فوا أسفي إنْ كانَ يغني تأسُّفي

    وما حَذَري إنْ كانَ يجدي تحذري

    Had he appealed for aid in battle,

    It would have answered with ample support.

  16. وكنت أراني في النوائب صابراً

    فأعدَمني صبري فأنى تصبّري

    But at that time treason struck him down

    With no army or troops to defend him.

  17. وإنِّي لمقبول المعاذير في الأسى

    ومن يعتذر مثلي إلى الصبر يُعذر

    Take whoever you wish after taking Bander

    Of people you have chosen and prefer.

  18. لقد ضقت ذرعاً بعد فقدان باسل

    من الصيد مفتول الذراع غضنفر

    He who is missed, whose loss rends open chests,

    A day of glory and pride he was.

  19. وما سرّ نفسي بعده ما يسرّها

    ولا راق ما قد راق شيء لمنظري

    The living stream bid you drink, O Bander's grave,

    And the downpour of clouds has greeted you.

  20. فيا عبراتي كلّ آن تحدّري

    ويا نار أحشائي عليه تسعّري

    I asked, as tears wash my eyelids,

    About my usual companions - could you inform me?

  21. فقد غاض بحر كلَّما مدّ راحة

    إلى الوفد فاضت منه خمسة أبحر

    Destiny crouched in you, death brandishing his sword,

    When did the lion submit to being hobbled?

  22. فتسخر من وبل السحاب أكُفُّه

    بأبرعَ من وبل السحاب المسخّر

    That beautiful face - how it has changed!

    Though days had not altered it before.

  23. إلى الله خطب كل يوم يعاد لي

    برزءٍ من الأرزاء يقطع إبهري

    He would meet his guest joyfully

    With the face of a morning, features displayed.

  24. مصابٌ أُصيبَتْ فيه آل محمد

    برغم العوالي من وشيج وسمهري

    Though I knew they were bonds of affection

    That to kindness were loyal, and did not change.

  25. أصيبَتْ بقوم ما أُصيبَتْ ولم تصب

    به مُضَرُ الحمرا ولا آل حميرَ

    He passed on - but passed only

    To his Lord's pardon, and the spring of Kauthar.

  26. أرتنا المنايا كيف تُصمي سهامها

    وكيف تصول النائبات وتجتري

    Did Al Mushrifiya bid him farewell? Did Al Qana’

    Weep for him in every dwelling place?

  27. ولو أنَّه يُفدى فَدَتْهُ أماجدٌ

    ترى الموت إلاَّ فيه أربحَ متجر

    To whom did he leave horses like brides

    Never wed but to the victorious?

  28. ولو أنَّه يدعو الكمأة لنصره

    عليها أجابته بنصرٍ مؤزر

    Steeds who love dashing in battle position

    Where destiny barters and buys calamity.

  29. ولكنه اغتالته إذ ذاك غيلةً

    ولم تمتنع عنه بجند وعسكر

    We called him to glory many times but he would not answer,

    A call to honor and pride he spurned.

  30. خذي من تشائي بعد أخذك بندراً

    من الناس من قد شئته وتخيّري

    Though the caller was in his sight and hearing,

    A scene pleasing and informing to behold.

  31. فما كانَ مفقود تشق جيوبها

    عليه المعالي يوم مجد ومفخر

    Near glory, answering those who call,

    A leader who takes the arrogant horseman.

  32. سقاك الحيا المنهلُّ يا قبر بندر

    وحيّاك مُهراقُ الغمام الممّطر

    Will he meet us after this with others,

    In more blissful life or nobler company?

  33. سألتك والأجفان يرفضّ ماؤها

    عن الضيغم العادي فهل أنت مخبري

    Does he not know the kingdom was neglected after him,

    None left but Fahd to manage it?

  34. تدلّى عقيراً فيك والحتف صارم

    لعمري متى يُعقَرْ به الليث يُعقر

    The chests of the elite tightened

    At the loss of that leading master.

  35. محاسنُ ذاك الوجه كيف تغيّرت

    وكان على الأيام لم تَتَغيَّر

    Whoever contemplates the days with wisdom

    Sees them through the dazed bewildered eye.

  36. وكان يلاقي ضيفه متهلّلاً

    بوجه صباحٍ بالمحاسن مسفر

    We feared the descent of fate upon us

    And every day it warned us with a warner.

  37. وقد نُكّرت من بعد علمي بأنها

    معارف للمعروف لم تتنكر

    We are fooled by hopes - no drink in their mirage,

    No roses from them as a source.

  38. مضى لا مضى إلاَّ على عفور ربه

    ومسرح جنات ومورد كوثر

    We cry in vain over the world,

    No one of its people lasts forever.

  39. فهل وَدَّعَتْه المشرفيّة والقنا

    وناحت عليه البيض في كل محضر

    We hope to keep alive in it

    A lifetime, though it did not last for Chosroes and Caesar.

  40. لِمَن ترك الخيل الجياد كأنها

    عرائس ما زُفَّت لغير مظفر

    We aspire to the impossible, though our wishes

    Were nothing but fabricated tales.

  41. صواهل يعشقن الطراد بموقف

    تبيع الردى فيه الكماة وتشتري

    Man attains only what is predetermined.

    We must walk on four

  42. دعوناه للجدوى مراراً فلم يجب

    دعاءً لنا عن عزّة وتكبّر

    To a pit, not the proud man’s walk.

    Even if we dwelt in a lofty palace,

  43. وكان من الداعي بمرآى ومسمعٍ

    وفي منظر مما يروق ومخبر

    A strong citadel fortified with iron.

    Death comes at its set time,

  44. قريب من الحسنى مجيب لمن دعا

    زعيم بأخذ الفارس المتجبر

    Once brought to a man it is not delayed.

    No burden can protect from what God decreed,

  45. تراه سلانا بعد هذا بغيرنا

    بأرغد عيشٍ أم بأكرم معشر

    No coat of mail or shield defend against it.

    Yet when life is good to us in this world

  46. ألم يَدْر أنَّ المُلك أُهمل بعده

    ليس سوى فهد له من مدبر

    It mars its delight with bitterness.

    Whoever abandons the world sees it

  47. وأنَّ بني العلياء ضاقت صدورها

    لفقدان ذاك السيّد المتصدر

    As a torn garment or nail clipping.

    My laments, always flow!

  48. ومن نَظَرَ الأيام معتبراً بها

    رآها بعين الذاهل المتحير

    My inner fire, blaze for him!

    Whenever hope extends its hand

  49. تحذّرنا صرف المنون نزولها

    وتنذرنا في كلّ يوم بمنذر

    To the dignitaries, five seas surge within.

  50. ونغتر بالآمال لا في سرابها

    شراب ولا منها ورود لمصدر

  51. ونبكي على الدنيا على غير طائل

    وما أحدٌ من أهلها بمعمَّر

  52. نؤمّل فيها أنْ يدومَ لنا بها

    حياة وما دامت لكسرى وقيصر

  53. ونطمع منها بالمحال ولم تكن

    أمانيُّنا إلاَّ أحاديث مفتري

  54. وهذي هي الآجال قد قُدّرت لنا

    ولم يَنَل الإنسان ما لم يُقدَّر

  55. ولا بد أن يُمشى بنا فوق أرْبَعٍ

    إلى حفرة لا مشيةَ المتبختر

  56. ولو أننا كنّا بقصرٍ مشيّدٍ

    وحصنٍ حصينٍ بالحديد مسوّر

  57. وإنَّ المنايا كائناتٌ لوقتها

    إذا قُدّمت للمرء لم تتأخر

  58. ولا وَزَرٌ مما قضى الله عاصم

    ولا يتّقى منه بدرع ومغفر

  59. على أنها الدنيا إذا ما صفا لنا

    بها العيش شابت صفوَه بمكدّر

  60. ومن ترك الدنيا رآها بعينه

    قصاصة ثوب أو قلامة أظفُر
