أيّ جمع هذا وأيّ اتِّفاق
وصحابٍ أماجد ورفاق
What a gathering, what accord
Of glorious companions and friends
خالفوا داعي الشّقاق وشقُّوا
بالتئام منه عصيّ الشّقاق
Who shunned the call of discord and split asunder
The fastened knots of obstinate discord
كلّ فرد منهم من الفضل كنز
ليس يخشى الإِملاق في الإِنفاق
Each one a treasure trove of merit
With no fear of stinting when asked to give
أيّ ناد نادي الأَجلّ شها
ب الدِّين بحر العلوم مفتي العراق
What a club called out the noblest
Scholar of religion, ocean of knowledge, Iraq’s Grand Mufti
لو أفضيت علومه في البرايا
شمل العالمين بالإِغراق
If his knowledge was unleashed on the land
It would deluge the two worlds with a flood
محرقٌ حجَّة الغياد ولا بدْعة
فإنَّ الشهاب للإحراق
A proof against specious arguments, no heretic he
For a meteor must burn bright
كاشف الغمّ إنْ توالت غموم
فارج الهمِّ عند ضيق الخناق
Dispelling gloom whenever gloom descends
Relieving anxiety when suffocation looms near
فإلى فضله تهادى المطايا
وإلى ربعه حنين النياق
To his grace flock the seekers
To his abode yearn the camel mares
فهو إذ ذاك ملجأ النَّاس طرًّا
وأجلّ الورى على الإِطلاق
He becomes people’s refuge in distress
The best of all without dispute
فتأمَّل فيما حوى اليوم نادي
ه ففيه مكارم الأَخلاق
Consider whom this club brought together
Virtues of character in their ranks
جمعوا بين شدَّة البأس في
الجدّ وفي الهزل رقَّة العشَّاق
They combine valor in contest with
Tenderness in jest like lovers
إنَّما السَّاعة الَّتي جمعتهم
جمعت لي محاسن الآفاق
The hour that brought them together
Brought to me vistas of horizons
فغدتْ مثل روضة باكرتها
غاديات بالوابل المهراق
Turning it into a garden in first bloom
With partridges wandering drunk
فكأَنَّ الحديث فيه مدام
حملتها إليَّ كفُّ السَّاقي
As if the talk therein was wine
Brought to me in cupbearer’s palm
مجلس ما انطوى على غير أُنسٍ
وخلى من تحاسد ونفاق
A gathering with no lack of joy
Devoid of envy and hypocrisy
يا له مجلس بأحمد قد أش
رق في الحُسن غاية الإِشراق
What a gathering illuminated by Ahmed
Peaked in beauty with utmost brilliance
دبَّ فيه السُّرور من كلّ وجهٍ
بأديب الزَّمان عبد الباقي
Joy permeated it from all around
With the era’s literatus Abdelbaqi
وتعالى إلى المعالي عليٌّ
وبالعوالي وبالسيوف الرقاق
And Ali ascended to the sublime
With swords and steeds of pedigree
وعلا قدره بقدر عليٍّ
وتسامى فكان في الفخر راقي
His worth rose to Ali's worth
And he rose high, foremost among the eminent
قلَّد النَّاس أيدياً من نداه
فهي مثل الأَطواق في الأَعناق
He collared people with his equal’s hands
Like necklaces around necks
كم شكرنا غداة يقتسم الوفد
نداه مقسّم الأَرزاق
How we thanked them when the delegates shared
Among them the Giver of Rizq's bounty
أسعد الله السَّعيد لديهم
كلّ عذب الكلام حلو المذاق
May God grant joy to the joyous among them
Whose talk was sweet and words so palatable
فأراعوا هذا الزَّمان بجمع
لا أُريعوا من بعدها بالفراق
They graced this era with assembly
Let them not disperse hereafter
