God has watered neighbors with the sides of a rock
And irrigated its distant tombs
Yet they are but battlefields for lions
And I love that I become their slain
A maid like the sun in beauty and joy
She watched from between chaste curtains its rise
Removing a veil from a moon-like brilliance
And letting like the dawn its branches hang
I remembered her and the teardrop melts its string
And my eyes had shed it all
And I said to Saad do not blame me for crying
And leave the youth’s passions and their tendencies
Did my insides burn except with her sigh
And did the eyes of morning flow except with her tears
So my soul did not remember except to increase its torment
At the slope of Rama what it wept
Remember from the era of distance nights
I wished if wishing could make it return
Nights I gave hardship to love’s sake
And I gave my soul entirely to imagining it
