1. [RIGHT]أتراكَ تعرفُ عِلَّتي وشَفائي[/P]

    يا داءَ قلبي في الهوى ودَوائي

    Do you know my malady and my remedy,

    O disease of my heart in love and my cure?

  2. ما رقَّ قلبك لي كأن شكايتي

    كانت لمسمع صخرةٍ صمَّاء

    Your heart was not softened towards me as if my complaint

    Was to the hearing of a deaf rock.

  3. والشوق برَّح بي وزاد شجونَهُ

    يا شدَّ ما ألقى من البرحاء

    And longing intensified its sorrows in me,

    Oh, how much I suffer from separation!

  4. عجباً لمن أخذ الغرامُ بقلبه

    أنَّى يعد به من الأحياء

    Strange is he whom love has gripped his heart,

    How can he count himself among the living?

  5. هل يعلم الواشون أن صبابتي

    كانت بلحظ مها وجيد ظباء

    Do the slanderers know that my youth

    Was spent gazing at the beautiful gazelle and the shy doe?

  6. وتجرُّعي مضضَ الملام من التي

    حلت عقيب الجزع في الجرعاء

    And I tasted the bitterness of blame from she

    Who came to me in distress after despair.

  7. لم يحسن العيش الذي شاهدته

    من بعد ذات الطلعة الحسناء

    The life I saw after the one of beautiful countenance

    Was not good living.

  8. فمتى أبلُّ صدىً بمرشف شادن

    نقض العهود ولا وفى لوفائي

    So when can I echo with joyful tidings

    The one who broke pacts and was not true to his loyalty?

  9. وجفا وملّ أخا الهوى من بعد ما

    كنا عقيدي ألفةٍ وإخاء

    And he was unfaithful and got bored of his lover after

    We were sincere friendship and brotherhood.

  10. ونأى بركب الظاعنين عشية

    أين الركابُ وأينَ ذاك النائي

    And he joined the company of the slanderers on an evening.

    Where are the friends? And where is the isolated one?

  11. أصبحتُ لمَّا ماسَ عدل قوامهِ

    أشكو طِعان الصعدة السمراء

    When the justice of his loyalty was distorted,

    I complain of the bite of the brunette coquette,

  12. وأجيبُ سائلَ مهجتي عن دائها

    دائي هواك فلا بليت بدائي

    And I answer the questioner about her disease:

    My disease is your love, so I have no other malady.

  13. لم يدر واللمسِ الممنع طبّه

    أن الدواء بمقتضى الأدواء

    He did not know - and forbidden touch is its cure -

    That the remedy is made possible by the diseases.

  14. عُج يا نديم على الكؤوس ميمِّماً

    وأدِر عليَّ سلافة الصهباء

    Hasten, O cup-bearer, solemnly to the cups,

    And pass me the clear drink.

  15. وأعد حديثَك لي بذكر أحبّةٍ

    كانوا بدور سناً لعين الرائي

    And repeat to me the mention of beloved ones

    Who were, in days gone by, the delight of this onlooker.

  16. مرت بنا أخبارهم فكأنها

    أرَجُ الصّبا عن روضة غناء

    News of them has passed as though it were

    The scent of youth from a garden of melody.

  17. وتحاكمتْ بي في الهوى أشواقُهم

    فقضى عليَّ الحبُّ أيَّ قضاء

    Their passions contended with me in love,

    And love judged against me, what a judgment!

  18. لو كنت أدري غدركم بمحبكم

    ما كنتُ أمكِنكُمْ على أحشائي

    Had I known your treachery against your lover,

    I would not have let you into my heart.

  19. لامَ النصيحُ فما سمعتُ ملامَه

    وصَدَدْتُ عنه لشقوتي وعنائي

    Advice blamed me but I did not listen to its blame,

    And I turned away from it in my misery and fatigue.

  20. ما كانَ أرشدني إلى سبل الهوى

    لو أنني أصغي إلى النصحاء

    It would not have guided me to the paths of love,

    Had I listened to the advice of the advisors.

  21. كيف المنازلُ بعد ساكنة الحمى

    عهدي بها قمريَّة الأرجاء

    How are the dwellings after the inhabitants of passion?

    My covenant with them was like the full moons.

  22. لما وقفت على منازلها ضحىً

    حَيَّيتُها بتحيَّةِ الكرماء

    When I stood at daybreak at their dwellings,

    I greeted them with the greeting of generous people.

  23. عادتنيَ الأيَّام في سُكانها

    كعداوة الجُهَّال للعلماء

    The days returned me to their inhabitants

    Like the enmity of ignoramuses towards scholars.

  24. هل أصبح الدهر الخؤون معاندي

    أم كانت الأيام من خصمائي

    Has time become inimical to me in its sorrows,

    Or have the days been among my opponents?

  25. ما للَّيالي إن نظرْنَ فضائلي

    نظرتْ إليَّ بمقلة عمياء

    What fault for the nights if they looked

    At my virtues with a blind eye?

  26. إنِّي أصون الشعر لا بخلاً به

    عن أن يذل بساحة اللؤماء

    I protect poetry not out of stinginess with it

    From being humiliated in the valley of vileness.

  27. أن كنت تثني بالجميل على امرئ

    فعلى جميل أبي الثناء ثنائي

    If you praise a man for his beauty,

    Then let my praise be for the beauty of my father.

  28. أعيى المناضلَ والمناظرَ فارتقت

    علياؤه قدراً على العلياء

    The tireless debater and polemicist, so his

    Sublimities rose high above the sublime.

  29. متوقد مثل الضرام فطانة

    وبلطف ذاك الطبع لطف الماء

    Kindled like glowing embers in discernment,

    And with gentle temperament, gentle like water.

  30. فتبلَّجت منه شموس فضائلٍ

    ظهرت على الدنيا بغير خفاء

    So its suns of virtues shone from him

    Appearing upon the world without any concealment.

  31. وعلت على أفهامنا ألفاظه

    فتمثَّلت بكواكب الجوزاء

    And his words rose above our minds,

    So they were depicted as stars of Capricorn.

  32. تلك الرويّة والسجيَّة لم تزل

    أقمار أفقٍ أو نجوم سماء

    That fluency and eloquence have remained

    Moons of a horizon or stars of a sky.

  33. كم قد أفيضت من يديه لنا يدٌ

    شكراً لهاتيك اليد البيضاء

    How abundantly has a hand poured from his hands

    For which we are thankful, for that white hand.

  34. إيْ والذي جعل العلى من مجده

    فرح الصديق وغمَّة الأعداء

    Yes, by Him Who made the loftiness of his glory

    A joy for the friend and a sorrow for the enemy!

  35. شِمنا بوارق نائل من سيله

    متتابع الإحسان بالآلاء

    We sensed from the clouds of his attainment

    A succession of favors with blessings.

  36. هيهات يحكي جوده صوب الحيا

    والغيث موقوف على الأنواء

    Alas! His generosity relates to the living,

    While the rain is held back by the clouds.

  37. بحر إذا التمس المؤمِّلُ ورْده

    فاضت عليه زواخر الأنداء

    It is a sea - if the hopeful seeks its pearls -

    So its heavy rains pour upon him.

  38. إن قيل في الزوراء أصبح قاطناً

    فاعلم بأنَّ المجدَ في الزوراء

    If it is said he settled in Az-Zawra',

    Then know that glory is in Az-Zawra'.

  39. نُشرت علومك في البلاد جميعها

    كالصُّبح إذ ملأ الفضا بضياء

    Your knowledge spread in all the lands

    Like the dawn when it fills the space with light.

  40. ولك الذَّكاءُ كأنّما برهانه

    يكسو سناه تبلّج ابنِ ذكاء

    And you have intelligence as if its proof

    Clads its brilliance in the splendor of intelligence.

  41. ونظرتَ في الأشياء نظرة عارف

    حتَّى عرفت حقائق الأشياء

    And you looked upon things with the eye of a knower

    Until you knew the realities of things.

  42. وكشفتَ من سر العلوم غوامضاً

    فيهن كانت حيرة الحكماء

    And you uncovered obscure mysteries of knowledge

    In which were the confusion of the wise.

  43. أجريت حكم الله بين عباده

    فعَلَتْ بحكمك راية الإفتاء

    You exercised God's judgment among His servants,

    So by your judgment the banner of jurists rose.

  44. وكأنما يوحى إليك فقد بدت

    لك معجزات النظم والإنشاء

    And it is as if revelation comes to you, so

    The marvels of prose and poetry appeared to you.

  45. فَعَلَت لك الأقلام في مهَج العدى

    ما تفعل الأبطال في الهيجاء

    And for you the pens did against the enemy's viscera

    What the heroes do in battles.

  46. خرسٌ إذا أنطقتَها بأنامل

    أخرَسْتَ فيها ألسن الفصحاء

    When you articulated with your fingers,

    You silenced the eloquent tongues.

  47. أبكيتها فتضاحكت لبكائها

    روضُ الفضائل لا رياض كبار

    You made them weep, and they smiled at their weeping,

    The garden of virtues, not gardens of great ones.

  48. فإذا مدحت مدحت غير مراهن

    فيها وغير معرض لرياء

    So if you praise, you praise without ulterior motive

    In it, and without inclined to ostentation.

  49. فاهنأ بهذا العيد إنك عيده

    يا فرحتي دون الورى وهنائي

    So congratulations on this feast, you are its feast,

    O my joy, beyond all others, and my delight!

  50. وأجزْ عبيدك في رضاك فإنه

    وأبيك غايةُ مطلبي ورجائي

    And reward your servants with your satisfaction, for it

    And your father are the goal of my pursuit and hope!

  51. لا زلت منفرداً بما أدَّيته

    من رفعةٍ وفضيلة وعلاء

    You remain unparalleled in what you have given

    Of loftiness, merit and sublimity.
