1. كادَ أنْ يَقضي سَقاماً ونحولا

    إذ عصى في طاعة الحبّ العذولا

    He nearly died of illness and emaciation

    When he disobeyed the love of the aloof one

  2. دنفٌ لولا هواكم ما شكا

    كَبداً حرَّى ولا جسماً نحيلا

    A body, had it not been for your love, would not have complained

    Of an inflamed liver or a frail frame

  3. علم العاذل ما لاقى بكم

    يوم أَزْمَعْتُم وإنْ كانَ جهولا

    The one estranged knew what he encountered through you

    The day you turned away, though he was ignorant

  4. من صباباتٍ أَذابَتْه أسًى

    وغرام أَهرَقَ الدَّمع همولا

    With sorrows that melted him, shed by gazelles

    And a passion that spilled tears flowing

  5. وصبابات الهوى قد سَوَّلَتْ

    لدموعي في جفاكم أن تسيلا

    The gazelles of love had tempted

    My tears to flow over your estrangement

  6. لا أرى الصَّبر جميلاً عنكم

    ومحال أن أرى الصبر جميلا

    I see no good in patience without you

    And it's impossible to see patience as good

  7. قد ذكرناكم على شحط النوى

    فانثنينا عند ذاك الذكر ميلا

    We remembered you with brokenness of spirit

    So we inclined at that remembrance

  8. يا لها ذكرىٍ أهاجت لوعة

    أخَذَتْ منِّي الحشا أخذاً وبيلا

    Oh what a memory that stirred up agony

    And took decisively from me composure and resolve

  9. هبَّتِ الإرواح من أحيائكم

    فانتشقناها شمالاً وقبولا

    The spirits blew from your settlements

    So we breathed them in from left and right

  10. فكأنَّا بالصّبا حينئذٍ

    قد شربناها من الراح شمولا

    It was as if we had then drank east wind

    From the wine skin in draughts

  11. يا رفيقيّ وهل من مُسْعدٍ

    لعليل يشتكي طرفاً عليلا

    Oh my friend, is there anyone fortunate

    For one aggrieved to complain of the frail

  12. بلّ كُميّه من الدَّمع وما

    بلّ من أحشائه الدَّمع غليلا

    Rather, blindness from tears, not

    Tears flowing from his intestines

  13. لامني العاذل جهلاً بالهوى

    وغدا الناصر في الحبّ خذولا

    The estranged blamed me wrongly for love

    And the helper in love became treacherous

  14. أنا لولا شغفي فيكم لما

    وَجَدَ الّلاحي إلى العذل سبيلا

    Had I not been passionate about you, the critic

    Would not have found a way to blame

  15. ما على اللاّئم من مستغرم

    يعشق السالف والخدَّ الأسيلا

    There is no fault in one who loves the charming one

    And the soft cheek that is radiant

  16. راح يُلقي لقيَ السُّوءِ على

    مَسْمَعي في عذله قولاً ثقيلا

    He went on castigating my hearing

    With his vile words in his estrangement

  17. ليتني قبل الهوى لم أتّخِذْ

    ساحر الطرف من السرب خليلا

    I wish before love I had not adopted

    The captivating glance of the flock as a friend

  18. لست أدري إذ رَنَتْ ألحاظهم

    ألِحاظاً أرْهَفوها أم نصولا

    I don't know, when their glances glanced

    Glances they sharpened, or arrows they launched

  19. ظعن الحيُّ وأضحى حبُّهم

    يسأل الأرْسُمَ عنهم والطلولا

    The living blamed them, and their love

    Asked the meadows and hills about them

  20. ليت شعري أين سارت عيسُهم

    تقطعُ البيداء وَخْداً وذميلا

    I wish I knew where their settlements journeyed

    Crossing the desert, pace by pace

  21. ويعاني ما يعاني بعدَهُم

    زفرةَ الأشواق والحزنَ الطويلا

    And what one who loved them suffers after them

    The sigh of longing and prolonged grief

  22. ساهرُ المقلة في الوجد فما

    يطعم الغمض به إلاَّ قليلا

    The sleepless watcher in fervor so

    He tastes no sleep but a little

  23. أمَروا بالصبر عنهم ولكم

    لُذْتُ بالصَّبر فما أغنى فتيلا

    They commanded patience from them, but for you

    I delighted in patience, so it availed nothing

  24. صاحبي أَنت خبيرٌ بالهوى

    أترى مثل الهوى داءً قتولا

    My friend you are wise in love

    Do you see any cure for a love like death

  25. عارضٌ منن عَبرة أهرقْتُها

    روَّضَتْ رَوْضَ جوىً كانَ محيلا

    An expression of grief I shed

    Tamed the ferocity that had been refractory

  26. إن أردْتُم راحة الروح بكم

    فابعثوا الريح إلى روحي سبيلا

    If you want tranquility of spirit through you

    Then send the wind to my spirit a passage

  27. وأعِدْها مرَّةً ثانيةً

    يا نسيماً هيّج الوجد بليلا

    And restore it a second time

    Oh breeze, stir up passion by night

  28. عَلِمَ الله بأنِّي شاعر

    لم أقل زوراً ولم أمْدَحْ بخيلا

    God knows I am a poet

    Who has not lied or praised out of greed

  29. قد كفاني الله في ألطافه

    بأبي عيسى نوالاً ومنيلا

    God has spared me in His subtlety

    With Abu Isa, attainment and drinking place

  30. بالزكيِّ الطاهر الشَّهْمِ الَّذي

    طابَ في النَّاس فروعاً وأُصولا

    The pure, magnanimous, valiant one

    Who was fragrant among men in roots and branches

  31. من يُنيلُ النَّيْل من إحسانه

    والعطاءُ الجمَّ والمال الجزيلا

    One who attains favour from his beneficence

    And abundant giving, wealth abounding

  32. وإذا ما لفحت هاجرةٌ

    كانَ من رمضائها ظلاًّ ظليلا

    If an oryx wanders by

    It finds in his meadows ample shade

  33. واضح الفخر ومن هذا الَّذي

    يبتغي يوماً على الشَّمس دليلا

    Clear in pride, and who is this one

    Who seeks one day over the sun proof

  34. من فتىً فيه وفي آبائه

    كلّ ما قد قيل في الأنجاب قيلا

    A young man in whom is found

    All that is said of feats among the eminent in ancestry

  35. أنْجَبُ العالم أمًّا وأباً

    وأعزُّ النَّاس في النَّاس قبيلا

    He brought forth for the world a mother and father

    And most honoured of people in origin

  36. إنَّما آل جميل غُرَّةٌ

    أُلْهِموا المعروف والفعلَ الجميلا

    Indeed the family of Jamil are a virtuous folk

    Inspired in beneficence and noble deed

  37. وَرِثوها عن أبيهم شيَماً

    تبلُغ العلياء والمجد الأثيلا

    They inherited these qualities from their father

    Reaching highest virtue and enduring glory

  38. قد أحَلَّتْهم نفوسٌ شَرُفَتْ

    بمكان الأنجم الزهر حلولا

    Souls ennobled them that mounted

    To the place of stars in gentle manner

  39. قل لمن يزعم أن يُشْبِهَهُم

    لم تَنَلْ بالزعم شيئاً مستحيلا

    Tell whoever claims to equate them

    You have not attained the impossible by such a claim

  40. وبروحي من يهين المال في

    جوده الوافي ومن يحمي النزيلا

    By my soul, one who scorns wealth in

    His perfect munificence, and who protects the guest

  41. وإذا ما هزّه مستنجدٌ

    بعُلاهُ هزَّه عضباً صقيلا

    Whenever the weak cling to him

    He responds with ready zeal to assist

  42. طاول الشمّ الرواسي في العلى

    وجديرٌ في علاه أن يطولا

    He set lofty pillars for the summit

    And it befits his loftiness to ascend

  43. وإذا ما سُئِل الفضل اغتدى

    مُبلِغاً من كلّ من يًسألُ سولا

    Whenever favour is sought he rises up

    Conveying to each who asks in full

  44. لم أزل حتَّى أوارى في الثرى

    مقصراً فيهم ثنائي ومطيلا

    I will not cease until I am covered in the earth

    Giving him too little praise, and prolonging

  45. أورِثوها كابراً عن كابرٍ

    مكرُماتٍ لم تزل جيلاً فجيلا

    They inherited from a magnificent forebear

    Magnanimity that never ceased from generation to generation

  46. نَجَموا بعد أبيهم أنجماً

    لا أراهم بعد إشراقٍ أُفولا

    They shone like stars after their father

    I do not see them setting after rising

  47. خَلَفٌ عن سالفٍ أخْلَفَهُم

    للندى بحراً وللوفد مقيلا

    A progeny from ancestors they succeeded

    Who settled them a sea for the dew, and lodging for guests

  48. كلُّ فردٍ يلبس الدهر به

    غرراً تُشْرِقُ فيه وحجولا

    Each individual adorns the ages with

    Scattered pearls gleaming through them

  49. مظهرٌ من صنعه منقبة

    حيَّر الأفكار فيها والعقولا

    A splendid work of their making is a feat

    That bewildered thoughts and minds

  50. أبدعوا في مكرماتٍ منهم

    فَعَلت آياتُها فيهم فصولا

    They perfected in their noble deeds

    Signs that succeeded in phases amongst them

  51. سَلْهم الفضل فهم أهل له

    وسواهم يحسب الفضل فضولا

    Ask them for merit, they are deserving of it

    And others account merit redundant

  52. وارتقت أنواءهم ممطرةً

    لا ندىً نزراً ولا وعداً مطولا

    Their heights attained the lofty quarters

    Pouring not meager drops but copious rainfall

  53. ضَمِنَتْ آمالُنا إحسانهم

    وتضمَّنْ ولا ريب الحصولا

    Our hopes are guaranteed by their beneficence

    And attainment is assured, no doubt

  54. يا بني عبد الغنيّ العزّ لي

    في معاليكم وما كنتُ ذليلا

    Oh clan of Abdulghani the Honoured

    Through your heights I have not been disgraced

  55. كُلَّما ألْبَسْتُ شعري مدحكم

    سحبَ الشعر من الفخر ذيولا

    Whenever I clothe my poem with your praise

    The poem trails the train of pride
