1. يا نائباً غابَ عنِّي الصّبر مُذْ بانا

    هلاّ سألتَ عن المشتاق ما عانى

    O you who were absent, patience has fled me ever since we parted

    Why didn't you ask how the longing lover fared

  2. ما راق في عينه شيء يروق لها

    ولا اصطفى غير من صافيت إخوانا

    Nothing pleases his eye or gives it joy

    Except those whose friendship was pure and sincere

  3. ولا إذا غرَّدت ورقاء في فنن

    أملَت عليَّ من الأوراق أشجانا

    Whenever the warblers trilled among the branches

    Their songs invoked heartache and sorrow in me

  4. وصرت في حال من لا يبتغي بدلاً

    بالأهل أهلاً وبالجيران جيرانا

    I remain in a state of one who desires no substitute

    With family as family, and neighbors as neighbors

  5. ما زلت أخضِلُ أجفاني بأدمعها

    إذا تذكَّرتُ أوطاراً وأوطانا

    I moisten my eyelids with her tears

    Whenever I remember dwellings and homelands

  6. أشدّهم في الوغى بأساً وأكرمهم

    كفًّا وأعظمهمُ في قدره شانا

    Fiercest among them in battle, most generous of hand

    Greatest in rank, highest in station

  7. خليفة الله في الأقطار محترم

    إنَّ العزيز عزيز حيث ما كانا

    God's regent in the lands, held in honor

    The precious is precious wherever he may be

  8. فلا كنامق والٍ للعراق ولا

    كمثل عبد العزيز اليوم سلطانا

    If all the kings of earth were weighed

    He would surpass them in brilliance and valor

  9. فلو وزنت ملوك الأرض قاطبة

    لزادهم في الندى والبأس رحجانا

    He awed them with his resolves they saw

    So the kings of earth submitted to him

  10. أراعها ما رأته من عزائمه

    فأذعنت لمليك الأرض إذعانا

    Nor did traversing the sea daunt him

    As he traveled from land to land

  11. ولم يربه ركوب البحر من خطر

    لما تنقل بلداناً فبلدانا

    Like the sun whose rays fill the world

    No horizons can conceal it

  12. كالشمس إذ تملأ الدنيا أشعتها

    لا تستطيع لها الأقطار كتمانا

    He safeguarded the entirety of Islam's dominion

    So God protected him as he protected it

  13. قد صان مملكة الإسلام أجمعها

    فصانه الله حِفظاً مثلما صانا

    He claimed no vainglorious triumphs

    Save those his deeds proved true

  14. وما ادّعى الفخر مجدٌ في صنائعه

    إلاَّ أقام عل ما قال برهانا

    May God protect him from all he fears

    And increase his faith after security

  15. الله يكلأه مما يحاذره

    وزاده الله بعد الأمن إيمانا

    Why would one who takes God as ally

    Fear any plot or peers

  16. وهل يبالي بشيءٍ أو يحاذر من

    أمرٍ ويرهب أمثالاً وأقرانا

    Who has the angels as troops and aides

    No mortal can resist him

  17. من كانَ مستنصراً بالله متخذاً

    حزب الملائك أجناداً وأعوانا

    From his noble sovereignty it saw

    Thrones bow to him, turbans doff

  18. رأت من الملك السامي جلالته

    فطأطأت أرؤساً منها وتيجانا

    It showed submission, downcast eyes, dislodged

    From hearts rancor and hatred

  19. أبدت خضوعاً وقرّت أعيناً وجلت

    عن القلوب من الأضغان أدرانا

    He purified until none could be found

    Save those thanking him for his grace

  20. صافى فصوفي حتَّى لم تجد أحداً

    إلاَّ ويوليه بالنعماء شكرانا

    Firm against any foe, though embroiled

    In flame, he would not bend lifelong

  21. صلب على الخصم لو تلقى الخطوب به

    في نارها طول هذا الدهر ما لانا

    His days he spends judging, taking counsel

    At night reciting Quran, wing-like

  22. يقضي النهار بأحكام يُدَبّرها

    رأياً ويتلو بجنح الليل قرآنا

    In Iraq his kindness brought justice

    After its oppression and wrongs

  23. وأظهرت بالعراق العدل رأفته

    من بعد ما مُلِئت ظلماً وعدوانا

    People yielded to him, obeying his command

    As the led camel yields, disdaining disobedience

  24. فانقادت الناس عن أمرٍ لطاعته

    طوع القياد فلا تأباه عصيانا

    What excellent men, focused on him

    Pillars of his shining state

  25. نعم الرجال رجال يحدقون به

    كانوا لدولته الغَرّاء أركانا

    How his meteors burned the rebels, leaving

    No devils surviving on earth

  26. كم أحرقت شهبه للماردين فما

    أبقَتْ على الأرض للباغين شيطانا

    Witnessing his wondrous triumphs

    Religions proliferated in doctrines of him

  27. رأت له معجزات الفخر فاختلقت

    مذاهباً في معاليه وأديانا

    Franks' nations concurred in loving him

    Young and old alike

  28. فأجمعت أممُ الإفرنج واتَّفَقَت

    على محبَّته شيباً وولدانا

    While you see them black as war when roused

    Like hawks circling glory's air

  29. بينا تراهم أسودَ الحرب إذ وُجِدوا

    يحلّقون بجوّ الفخر عُقبانا

    Battling foes rank-and-file, till you'd deem them

    On the battlefield, a single edifice

  30. يقاتلون العدى صَفًّا فتحسبهم

    في يوم معترك الأعداء بنيانا

    Basra now is calm, at peace

    Good things came with Suleiman

  31. فالبصرةَ الآن في خفضٍ وفي دعةٍ

    وكلّ خير أتاها من سليمانا

    Excelling, by his governance, what once

    Had stature, now made greater

  32. أجاد فيما يراه من سياستها

    فزان ما كانَ قبل اليوم قد شانا

    But how can I solace loved ones departed

    When no solace can be found for this heart

  33. وكيفَ أسلو أحبَّاءً مُنِيت بهم

    وما وجدت لهذا القلب سلوانا

    O how strongly parting's morn oppressed me

    When I bade farewell to friends there

  34. يا شدَّ ما راعني يوم الفراق ضحًى

    ودَّعْتُ فيه من الغادين أظعانا

    My inclination turns only to the noble, eloquent

    Who befriends nobility, makes them intimates

  35. ولا يميل إذَنْ إلاَّ إلى شرف

    ذو اللبّ متّخذ الأَشراف أخدانا

    Hearing any of his virtues, I incline

    Joyfully to what I hear

  36. ولا سمعت بشيء من مناقبه

    إلاَّ انثنيت بما أسمعت نشوانا

    They pursued glory until one said

    The kings of Ottomans revive Ottoman rule

  37. تَتَبَّعوا المجد حتَّى قال قائلهم

    أحْيَتْ ملوكُ بني عثمان عثمانا

    Tongues unleashed his praises

    Publicly and in secret

  38. فأطلقت ألْسُنَ الدنيا مدائِحُه

    وأسْمعت مَن بها سرًّا وإعلانا

    Hearts you brought together, rarely joined

    In love of you, lords and notables

  39. جمعت منها قلوباً قلَّما اجتمعت

    محبَّة فيك ساداتٍ وأَعيانا

    If my tongue and pen articulate

    They reap speech's branches, gather ears

  40. وإنْ تلفَّظت في نطق وفي قلم

    قرّطت من دور الأَلفاظ آذانا

    You told, no allurement escaped you

    Harshly eloquent, gazing intently

  41. لقد حكيت وما فاتتك فاتنة

    قسّ الفصاحة أو ناظرت سحبانا

    You perfected whatever you decreed in wisdom

    Requited for that kindness with kindness

  42. أحْسَنْتَ في كلِّ ما دبّرْت من حكم

    جُزِيتَ عن ذلك الإِحسان إحسانا

    By your discernment and knowledge

    You placed justice and equity in balance

  43. فمن كمالك عن رأي ومعرفة

    وضعت للعدل والإِنصاف ميزانا

    A favor from God, you were granted perfection

    So you favored others with bounty and grace

  44. فضل من الله أُوتينا الكمال به

    فضلتَ غيرك معروفاً وعرفانا

    God grant you goodness among people with insight

    Perplexing keen minds with your own

  45. لله درّك بين الناس من فطن

    حيّرت في ذهنك الوقَّاد أذهانا

    Clemency letting fires burn cold

    Resolve letting seas blaze

  46. حلم به تترك النيران باردةً

    وعزمة تترك الأَمواه نيرانا

    You mete out bounty in its proper place

    Nothing is mighty or weak before you

  47. لا تُنزلُ الجود إلاَّ في منازله

    وما عزّ عندك من شيء وما هانا

    You saw things whose benefits are not hidden

    As if before them, time was blind

  48. أبصرت أشياءَ لا تخفى منافعها

    كأن الأَوائل عنها الدهر عميانا

    And the people, by that cleansing, were then

    As if a soul breathed, a meadow bloomed

  49. والناس من ذلك التنظيف يومئذٍ

    كأنَّما انتشقت روحاً وريحانا

    You gave us fresh sweet water to drink

    Till the thirsty drinker was sated

  50. سقيتنا الماء عذباً ما به رنق

    فأصبح الظَّامئ العطشان ريَّانا

    You left none, though people thronged

    To increase the sea's swell with seas

  51. ولم تدع وجميع الناس تملأه

    ممَّا يزيد بمرضى البحر بحرانا

    By you Basra healed of the debauchery that pained

    Souls and bodies alike

  52. صحت بك البصرة الفجار من مرض

    أضرَّ بالناس أرواحاً وأبدانا

    After illnesses had dyed

    Faces with death's hues

  53. من بعدما كانَ الأَمراض قد صبغت

    منها الوجوه بصبغ الموت ألوانا

    Who then could deny it

    When from bodies you made pillars

  54. من ذا الَّذي ينكر الأَشياء حينئذٍ

    وقد قلبت من الأَبدان أعيانا

    O palm tree of glory, we tend its saplings

    Root and branch, fronds and stalks

  55. يا دوحة المجد نزكو في مغارسها

    أصلاً وفرعاً وأغصاناً وقضبانا

    On your brow glory inscribed its lines

    How many titles of that script I've read

  56. على جبينك خَطَّ المجدُ أسطُرَه

    وكم قرأت لذاك الخطّ عنوانا

    My God, protect you from a man

    Who makes magic of words and rhetoric

  57. ويا لك الله إن حرَّزت من رجل

    يمثّل السحر ألفاظاً وتبيانا

    Plucking fruits of grandeur from his epistles

    Till the gardens of merit became orchards

  58. تجنى ثمار المعالي من رسائله

    حتَّى غدت عن رياض الفضل بستانا

    Since your luminous face met our eyes

    Sorrows lifted from radiant Basra

  59. ومذ بدا وجهك الزَّاهي لأعيننا

    جلا عن البصرة الفيحاء أحزانا

    In your coming, joy perfected

    Though moons may disappear at times

  60. وفي قدومك ما تمَّ السرور به

    وربَّما غابت الأَقمار أحيانا
