1. The noble and all noble virtues—

    the excellent and the illustrious—

  2. have lost their faithful Muhammad:

    alas for the one lost, and those bereft!

  3. The sanctuaries of piety stand deserted,

    and those mosques have fallen idle;

  4. schools have wept for him,

    and after him the mosques stand empty.

  5. He was the mightiest proof

    of the faith, silencing every denier.

  6. In all creation there is

    no witness stronger or more just than he.

  7. By God, I swear that he

    was peerless in the creed of Islam.

  8. The wellsprings of his knowledge

    were open paths, laid out for every seeker.

  9. To the upright faith he was—

    whenever one looked—a hand and supporting arm.

  10. O preacher, whose very presence

    held a majesty that softened stone!

  11. O you who have gone far from your companions,

    will you return after this long absence?

  12. How often you barred a man

    from the gate of his desires and designs;

  13. and you melted tears of mine

    that, until this day, had been frozen.

  14. Where are the precious pearls, the rare creations,

    the original works and rich insights?

  15. I never imagined that I

    would mourn, indignant at the days,

  16. or, after losing my loved ones, yield

    to calamities and their afflictions—

  17. with neither my strong arm beside me

    nor any helper against my age.

  18. I have indeed grown weary of life

    from what I witness and endure.

  19. When we lost the righteous,

    I knew that time itself was corrupt.
