1. فؤاد كطرفِك أمسى عليلا

    وجسمٌ كخصرِك يشكو النحولا

    My heart became sick like your eyelids,

    And my body complained of emaciation like your waist,

  2. وأضناه حبُّكِ حتّى اغتدى

    كما تبصرين ضعيفاً نحيلا

    And your love made it lean

    As you see it weak and thin.

  3. فرفقاً به إنَّه في هواك

    على حالة في الهوى لن تحولا

    So be gentle with it, for in your love

    It will not change its state of passion.

  4. يبيت بطرْفٍ كثير السهاد

    فلم يذق الغمض إلاَّ قليلا

    It spends the night sleepless

    And scarcely knows a little slumber.

  5. وشوّقه البرق جنح الدُّجى

    وندب الحمامة ليلاً هديلا

    Lightning makes it long for the wings of night

    And the cooing of a dove makes it sleepless at night.

  6. فأصبح يشكو حريق الفؤاد

    ويقذف من مقلتيه سيولا

    So it complains of the burning of passion in the morning

    And sheds tears from its eyelids.

  7. وتسكرني نسمات الشمال

    فأغدو كأَنّي سُقيت الشمولا

    And the northern breezes intoxicate me

    Until I become as if I have drunk wine.

  8. وكم شرب الصب من عبرة

    بذكر الأحبَّة دهراً طويلا

    And how much the youth has drunk of tears

    Remembering the loved ones for so long.

  9. فما بلَّ فيها غليل الحشا

    وكيف تبلّ الدموع الغليلا

    But it does not quench the thirst of passion,

    And how can tears quench thirst?

  10. قتلتم أحبَّتنا المستهام

    وكم راح مثل المعنّى قتيلا

    You killed our beloved friends,

    And many like them died.

  11. وروَّضتموا روض هذا الهوى

    وربع التصبّر أمسى محيلا

    You tamed the garden of this love,

    And patience became impossible.

  12. ولمَّا أخذتم بترحالكم

    أخذتم فؤاديَ أخذاً وبيلا

    When you left on your journey

    You took my heart most cruelly.

  13. غداةَ استقلَّت حُداة الظعون

    تجوب المهامه ميلاً فميلا

    The morning the camel-litters departed

    Roaming from landmark to landmark.

  14. فهلاَّ بعثتم إلينا النسيمَ

    فكانَ النسيمُ إلينا رسولا

    Why did you not send us the breeze?

    So it would be a messenger to us.

  15. بَخِلْتُم بطيف يزور المحبّ

    وما كنت أعهد فيكم بخيلا

    You were stingy to send an apparition to visit the lover,

    And I did not know you to be stingy.

  16. سددتم سبيل خيال الكرى

    فما وجد الطيف نحوي سبيلا

    You closed off the way for the imagination of souls

    So no specter found its way to me.

  17. قفا يا خليليَّ دون الغُوَير

    ولا يتركنَّ الخليل الخليلا

    Stop, my friend, short of cheating me

    And let not the friend abandon his friend.

  18. لنقضي حقوق ديار عفت

    ونبكي الديار فنسقي الطلولا

    Let us fulfill the rights of the abode of chastity

    And weep for the abode and water its sand.

  19. وكانتْ بروجاً لتلك البدور

    فيا ليتها لم تلاق الأُفولا

    Its towers were like stars

    Would that they had not met their setting!

  20. فيا دارنا لا عداك الحيا

    وجرَّت عليكِ الغوادي ذيولا

    Oh our house, none like you brings life

    And the floods have dragged their tails over you.

  21. لعينيك قد ذلَّ أختَ المها

    فهان وكانَ عزيزاً جليلا

    My eyes have been humbled for your eyes

    And the noble and mighty became insignificant.

  22. إلى كم أداري وأرضي الوشاة

    وأسمعُ في الحبِّ قالاً وقيلا

    How long will I please and satisfy the slanderers

    And listen to this one’s words and that one’s?

  23. لقد لامني في هواك العذولُ

    وألقى على السمعِ قولاً ثقيلا

    The censors blamed me for loving you

    And cast heavy words upon my hearing.

  24. فضلَّ العذولُ ضلالاً بعيداً

    وحاول أمراً غدا مستحيلا

    The censors have gone far astray

    And attempted something now impossible.

  25. إذا المرءُ ضلَّ سبيل الغنى

    فأنوار عثمان تهدي السبيلا

    When one loses the way of wealth

    The lights of Uthman guide the way,

  26. إلى بذل نائله المستفاد

    نؤمُّ إليه قبيلاً قبيلا

    We flock tribe by tribe

    To the one who grants wishes to the seeker.

  27. متى أنكرت فضله الحاسدون

    أقامت عليه المعالي دليلا

    When the envious denied his superiority

    The heights bore witness to his merit.

  28. وإن حلَّ نائله موطناً

    ينادي الهنا بالعناء الرحيلا

    And when the time came for his seeker to leave

    He called out farewell, painful departure!

  29. سريع الإِجابة سؤّاله

    وما زالَ في كلِّ خيرٍ عجولا

    Swiftly answering supplications

    Never ceasing to hasten towards good.

  30. نما فرعُه إذ زكا أصلُه

    فطاب فروعاً وطابَ أُصولا

    His branches thrived as his roots grew sound

    Bearing wholesome fruit and roots.

  31. وفيه نمتْ روضات المكرمات

    ولم يرد عود الأماني ذبولا

    In him grew gardens of generosity

    And the boughs of hopes did not wither.

  32. وقد رفع الفضل بعد الخمول

    فلا شهد الفضل فيه الخمولا

    He raised merit after decline

    And merit in him knew no decline.

  33. وجدَّ فنالَ بما قد سعى

    مقاماً عليًّا ومجداً أثيلا

    He strove and so attained

    A lofty position and lasting glory.

  34. ولِم لا ينال العُلى ماجد

    يمدُّ إلى المجد باعاً طويلا

    Why should the glorious not attain the heights?

    Stretching out his arm to lasting glory.

  35. ولما استظلَّ به الخائفون

    رأوه لذلك ظلاًّ ظليلا

    When the frightened gathered under his shade

    They saw him as ample, sheltering shade.

  36. أخو البأس يمنع صرف الزمان

    ويعطي المقلّ عطاءً جزيلا

    The champion prevents time’s caprice

    And gives the supplicant ample gifts.

  37. يُنيل وإن لامه الَّلائمون

    ومن يمنع الغيث أن لا ينيلا

    He attains even if the blamers blame him

    And who can prevent the rain from falling?

  38. تعشَّقْتُ علويَّ فضل العلوم

    فما تبتغي بالمعالي بديلا

    I fell passionately for the superior merit of knowledge

    And do not seek with the heights any substitute.

  39. لقد جئت في معجزات الكمال

    وها أنت تعيي بهنَّ الفحولا

    I came in the miracles of perfection

    Perplexing even the minds of men.

  40. وحيَّرت فيها فهوم الرجال

    فأبهتَّ فيما أتيت العقولا

    Your resolves that reveal calamities

    Nearly make mountains crumble.

  41. عزائمك الكاشفات الكروب

    تكاد الجبال بها أن تزولا

    By God, what determination lies in your ascent!

    Returning the grieved swiftly to serenity.

  42. ولله من هِمَمٍ في عُلاك

    تعيد الحزون سريعاً سهولا

    If you sought to topple mountain foundations by it

    You would make the mountains a flattened ruin.

  43. فلو رمت قلع الرَّواسي بها

    أعدت الرَّواسي كثيباً مهيلا

    And you destroyed the rubble with your right hand

    To deserve fair praise.

  44. وأفنت يمينك جمع الحطام

    لكي تستحقَّ الثناء الجميلا

    And left an enduring, praiseworthy legacy

    That people recount for generations.

  45. وأبقيت في الدهر ذكراً حميداً

    تذاكره الناس جيلاً فجيلا

    With your pen, you made the height of ascent

    Into kohl and the cheek of hopes tearful.

  46. بخطّك صيَّرت طرف العُلى

    كحيلاً وخدّ الأماني أسيلا

    The servants came to you with poems

    Roaming in your praise lengthwise and crosswise.

  47. أتى بقوافٍ إليك العُبَيْدُ

    تجول بمدحك عرضاً وطولا

    Reward me by accepting them

    For the utmost hope is to attain acceptance.

  48. أجزني عليها الرضا بالقبول

    فأقصى المنى أن أنال القبولا
