غرب البدر أم دفينٌ بقبر

وهوى النجم أم أوى خلف ستر

Has the moon set or lies buried in a grave?

Has the star fallen or taken shelter behind a veil?

ضلَّ هادي العيون واحلو لك اللي

ل فلا فرق بين أعمى وهرّ

The guide of my eyes has gone astray and to you is the sweetness of the night

There is no difference between a blind man and one who can see

ماج حتى كأنما يصدم البح

ر بموج من بحره مسبكرّ

The sea rages as if it is colliding with a wave from its raging sea

And you see the sea and think the water is an abyss

وترى البحر تحسب الماء حبراً

وكأنَّ السماء أعماق بحر

And as if the sky is the depth of the sea

Darkness surrounds my eyes wherever they stretch

ظلمات تحيط بالطرف أنىَّ

امتد لم يعد مده قيد شبر

Their range is no longer the measure of a handspan

And this darkness is better than light

ولهذا الظلام خيرٌ من النو

ر اذا كنت لا ترى وجه حر

If you do not see a face that is free

هاهنا أطلق العنان لأشجا
