1. هل يسمعون سوى صدى الكروانِ

    صوتاً يرفرف في الهزيع الثاني

    Do they hear naught but the caravan's echo

    A voice fluttering in the second dusk

  2. من كلِّ سارٍ في الظلام كأنَّه

    بعضُ الظلام تُضلُّه العينانِ

    Of everyone walking in the dark as though

    He's part of the dark, led astray by both eyes

  3. يدعو إذا ما الليل أطبق فوقه

    موجُ الدياجر دعوةَ الغرقان

    Calling out when the night wraps him up

    The wave of pitch darkness calls out like one drowning

  4. ما ضرَّ مَن غنَّى بمثل غنائه

    أنْ ليس يبطش بِطشة العِقبان

    No harm in one who sang like his singing

    That he doesn't strike with the talons of hawks

  5. إنَّ المزايا في الحياة كثيرة

    الخوف فيها والسَّطا سيان

    Indeed, the virtues in life are many

    Fear in it and ease are equal

  6. يا مُحييَ الليل البهيم تهجُّدًا

    والطير آوية إلى الأوكان

    O reviver of the ignorant night wakefully

    While the birds take refuge in nests

  7. يحدو الكواكب وهو أخفى موضعاً

    من نابغ في غمرة النسيان

    He chats with the planets while he is more hidden

    Than an eminent poet in the depths of oblivion

  8. قلْ يا شبيهَ النابغين إذا دُعوا

    والجهل يضرب حولهم بجران

    Say, O kin of eminent poets, when called

    And ignorance strikes around them with poles

  9. كم صيحة لك في الظلام كأنها

    دقات صدر للدُّجُنَّة حانِ

    How many a scream for you in the dark as though

    Beating a chest for the oppressed soul

  10. هُنَّ اللغات ولا لغات سوى التي

    رُفعت بهن عقيرة الوجدان

    These are the languages, and no languages but those

    Raised by them, a string of conscience

  11. إنْ لم تقيِّدْها الحروفُ فإنَّها

    كالوحي ناطقةٌ بكلِّ لسان

    If letters don't restrict them, then they

    Speak like revelation in every tongue

  12. أغنى الكلام عن المقاطع واللُّغى

    بث الحزين وفرحة الجذلان

    The speech is richest without divisions and foreignness

    Sad pouring out and joy of bud
