1. يا كتبي أشكو ولا أغضب

    ما أنت من يسمع أو يعتب

    O my books, I complain though I'm not angry

    You are not one who hears or blames

  2. يا كتبي أورثتني حسرة

    هيهات لا تنسى ولا تذهب

    O my books, you have left me with regret

    Alas! You neither forget nor go away

  3. يا كتبي ألبست جلدي الضنى

    لم يغنِ عني جلدك المذهب

    O my books, you have clad my skin with grief

    Your gilded cover was no use to me

  4. كم ليلة سوداء قضيتها

    سهران حتى أدبر الكوكب

    How many dark nights I spent

    Sleepless until the planets disappeared

  5. كأنني ألمح تحت الدجى

    جماجم الموتى بدت تخطب

    As if I see under the darkness

    The skulls of the dead seem to speak

  6. والناس إما غارق في الكرى

    أو غارق في كأسه يشرب

    While people either drowned in worries

    Or drowned in their cups drinking

  7. أو عاشق وافاه معشوقه

    فنال من دنياه ما يرغب

    Or a lover who found his beloved

    And got from his life what he desires

  8. أو سادر يحلم في ليله

    بيومه الماضي وما يعقب

    Or drunk dreaming in his night

    Of his past days and what follows

  9. ينتفع المرء بما يقتني

    وأنت لا جدوى ولا مأرب

    One benefits from what he possesses

    While you are useless and fruitless

  10. إلا الأحاديث وإلا المنى

    وخبرة صاحبها متعب

    Except for stories and wishes

    And the experience of their tired owner

  11. لا رحم الرحمن فيمن مضى

    من علم العالم أن يكتبوا

    May the Merciful not have mercy on those

    Who taught the world to write

  12. شكوتها والعمر في فجره

    فكيف بي لما دنا المغرب

    I complained while my life was still young

    How about me when dusk approached?

  13. لما دنا المغرب صالحتها

    تلك التي تشكي ولا تغضب

    When dusk approached I made peace with it

    That which complains yet gets no angry

  14. تلك التي قلت لها مرة

    والقلب دامٍ والحشا ملهب

    The one I once told while my heart was still bleeding and passion still burning

    O my books, you have left me with regret

  15. يا كتبي أورثتني حسرة

  17. فالآن يا كتبي تعالي لمن

    أخبثُ شيء عنده طيب

    Whose worst is best

    You're not worse than the toil of wishes

  18. ما أنت شر من عناء المنى

    وهي التي في صدقها تكذب

    While it is truthful yet lies

    You're not harsher than the agony of passion

  19. ما أنت أقسى من شقاء الهوى

    وهو الذي في لهوه يتعب

    While it tires though it plays

    You're not more expensive if expensive

  20. ما أنت أغلى ثمنًا إن غلا

    من جوهر يكنز أو يعطب

    Than a hoarded gem or damaged

    You don't lack, in drunkenness and pleasure

  21. ما أنت في سكر وفي متعة

    أخلى من السم الذي يشرب

    The poison that is sipped

    And say that we are of a flock

  22. ويحك إنا نحن من معشر

    يسبق فينا الدور أو يعقب

    Where turns alternate and follow

    Tomorrow we will all pass away

  23. غدًا سنمسي كلنا ما لنا

    في العيش إلا رفك المترب

    In life we have nothing but your dusty cover

    I wish when I'm under the soil

  24. فليت لي إذ أنا تحت الثرى

    جمجمة ثرثارة تخطب

    I have a talkative skull that speaks

    To readers who please me

  25. رهطًا من القراء يرضونني

    رضاي عن بلواك إذ أغضب

    Pleased with yourcondition when I complain

    O my books wish what you will

  26. يا كتبي ما شئت فلتحسبي

    أو شاء قرائي فليحسبوا

    Or let my readers think what they will
