لهب على الأمواج ذات ضرام

شفقان هذا في السماء منشّر
قانٍ وذاك على العباب الطامي
This glow spread in the sky
While that is on the billowy fog
الشمس والبحر المريج تلاقيا
أمّ الضياء ومعدن الإنعام
The sun and the wavy sea meet
The mother of radiance and the source of grace
خلعت سرابيل النهار كأنها
غيداءُ تسبح منه في حمّام
The garments of day took off as if
A diving maiden swimming joyfully
أفلت وكائن من شموس ممالك
بالشاطئين هوت هويّ الهام
I escaped, being from the suns of kingdoms
Falling with passion on the coasts
دهر يدور صباحه ومساؤه
متعاقبان على مدى الأيام
Time rotates its morn and eve
Succeeding through the days
يا حسرات والغزالة كاسفٌ
في الغرب حاجبها وراء لثام
Oh regrets, and the gazelle frowning
Behind her veil in the west
يرفلن في الحسن القشيب كأنما
ألبسنه يبقى على الأعوام
They revel in hoary beauty as if
Clothed to last through years
الحسن شمس في المليحة لا يرى
يومين في فلك حليف تمام
Beauty is a sun in the pretty one not seen
Two days in its loyal orbit intact
حسناء مصر وكم سبت من قيصر
عات وأذكت من جوى وغرام
The pretty Egyptian conquered many a Caesar
Passionate from her charm and love
رفلت كما ترفلن فاستعلى بها
عزُّ الجمال وعزة الأحكام
She revelled as beauties revel, so her
Pride of beauty and rule grew high
ملكت نفوس القوم حول سريرها
ورقابهم باللحظ والصمصام
She ruled people’s souls around her throne
And their necks with a glance and wink
وتجرعت سم الأساود بعد ما
ساغت من اللذات كأس سمام
And she sipped the poison of asps after
She enjoyed the cup of poisoned wine
وذوت فأين اليوم سمر محاجر
منها ولدن معاطف وقوام
And so she melted away, so where are today
Her rosy cheeks that gowns tailored?
الليل أرخى في السماء سدوله
ورمى باستار على الآطام
The night let down its curtains in the sky
And cast covers on the hills
من كل مُطّلع وكل ثنيّة
نور يغيب مبدّلاً بظلام
From each rise and every slope
A light sets replaced by darkness
تسري هنا لكمُ السفين كما سرى
شبح يؤمّ عوالم الاحلام
Ships sail here as sailed
The ghosts haunting dream lands
والنجم في غسق المساء كأنه
شرر تطاير في خلال أيام
And stars in the dusk of evening as if
Sparks scattered through days
والطير تزقو والغصون تناوحت
نشوى تميل تمايل النّوام
And birds chirp and branches sway
Branches lean with sways of slumber
يمسي رسول السلم بين فروعها
بعد التحام دائم وخصام
The messenger of peace rests between them
After constant clash and feud
والبحر يبتدر الشطوط أتيّه
بالكر آونة وبالإحجام
And the sea charges the shores
With ebb at times and flow at times
أبداً يرتل من روىٍّ واحد
شعراً معانيه بغير كلام
It forever chants from one spring
Poetry its meanings without words
حتى إذا اشتبك الظلام تشابهت
ثم الذرا بمواطئ الاقدام
Until darkness blends it disappeared
Then tread gently amid footsteps
درست معالمها فليس بظاهر
منها الحضيض ولا العماد السامي
I studied its features so neither low
Nor lofty pillars were visible
أغرقتها يا ليل فيك وربما
غرقت بحار فيك وهي طوام
You drowned it O night in you, and perhaps
Drowned seas in you while raging
بوركت فاغمر بالظلام ظلامي
يا مغرق الأفراح ولآلام
Blessed, so submerge my darkness in darkness
O drowner of joys and sorrows
