زعموك غير مجدَّد الألحان
ظلموك بل جهلوك يا كرواني
They claimed you unoriginal in your melodies
They wronged you, rather they were ignorant of you, oh Karawani
أسمعتني بالأمس ما لا عهد لي
بسماعه في غابر الألحان
Yesterday I heard from you what I had never known before
Among the melodies of the past
ورويت لي بالأمس ما لم تروِهِ
من نغمة وفصاحة ومعان
And you narrated to me yesterday what you had not narrated before
Of a melody, eloquence and meaning
شكواي منك وإن شكرتك إنه
سرٌّ تصرُّ به على الكتمان
My complaints about you, even as I thank you, are
A secret you insist on keeping confidential
شكري إليك وإن شكوتك إنه
سرٌّ تؤخِّره لخير أوان
My gratitude to you, even as I complain of you, is
A secret you delay for the best occasion
كنز يصان فهاتِ من حباته
ذخر القلوب وحلية الآذان
A treasure to be protected - so bring me some of its beads
The provision of hearts and adornment of ears
أنا لا أراك وطالما طرق النُّهى
وحيٌ ولم تظفر به عينان
I do not see you though the paths of prohibition have long
Been a revelation never glimpsed by eyes
أنا في جناحك حيث غاب مع الدجى
وإن استقر على الثرى جثماني
I am in your wing where it disappeared with the darkness
And if my body settled on earth
أنا في لسانك حيث أطلقه الهوى
مرحًا وإن غلب السرور لساني
I am in your tongue wherever passion set it free
Playfully even if happiness conquered my tongue
أنا في ضميرك حيث باح فما أرى
سرًّا يغيِّبه ضمير زماني
I am in your conscience wherever it laid bare
A secret my conscience's time would conceal
أنا منك في القلب الصغير مساجلٌ
خفق الربيع بذلك الخفقان
I dispute with you from the small heart
The throbbing of spring with that throbbing
أنا منك في العين التي تَهَبُ الكرى
وتَضنُّ بالصحوات والأشجان
I am with you in the eye that bestows worries
And is stingy with vigils and passions
طِرْ في الظلام بمهجة لو صافحتْ
حجر الوهاد لهمَّ بالطيران
Fly in the dark with a brain that if it grasped
The rocky plateau would take flight with the birds
تغنيك عن ريش الجناح وعزمه
فرحات منطلق الهوى نشوان
Your joy in the unfettered course of passion teaches you
To do without the wings and determination of feathers
علَّمتني بالأمس سرَّك كلَّه
سرَّ السعادة في الوجود الفاني
Yesterday you taught me all your secret
The secret of happiness in transient existence
سرُّ السعادة نفرة ومحبة
فيكم تُؤلَّف نافر الأوزان
The secret of happiness is aversion and love
In you, the discordant scales are reconciled
الكون أنتم في صميم نظامه
وكأنكم فيه الطريد الجاني
You are the cosmos in the essence of its system
As if you in it were the hunted guilty
أنتم سواءٌ كالصديق وبينكم
بعدٌ كما يتباعد الخَصمان
You are equal like friend yet between you
Is a distance as adversaries grow apart
لا يحمل الطيار وزر العاني
حمل ابن آدم عثرة الإخوان
The flier does not carry the load of the fallen
The burden of man is the stumbling of brethren
لا عالمٌ منكم ولا متعلمٌ
كلا ولا متقدِّمٌ أو وانِ
None of you is scholar or learned
No, nor advanced or regressing
متشابهين على الحياة فكلكم
ساري ظلامٍ هاتف بأغانِ
Alike in life so each of you
Is groping darkness calling with songs
متفرقين على المُقام ودأبكم
عند الرحيل تجمع القطان
Separate in station while your pace
In departure gathers you like sheep
وكأنَّما نُسخت لكلٍّ نسخةٌ
من هذه الأجواء والأوطان
As if for each a copy was transcribed
Of these atmospheres and homelands
فهو الشريك على نصيب واحدٍ
وهو الوحيد فما له من ثانِ
He is partner in one portion
And he the sole with no second
ذخر الطبيعة منه تُعْطَوْنَ الحِجى
لا من سباق بينكم ورهان
Nature hoards from him you are given livelihood
Not from any race between you or wager
أنتم بني الطير المسبِّح في الدجى
فيكم كهانة صالح الكهَّان
You are the children of birds glorifying in the gloom
In you lies the priesthood of the righteous priest
بعتم كرى الغافي وطيب رقاده
وبه اشتريتم يقظة اليقظان
You sold the slumber of the dormant and his sound sleep
And with it bought the waking of the vigilant
قل ما اشتهيت القول يا كرواني
في لهو ثرثار وحلم رزان
Say little I desired words, oh Karawani
In empty chatter and wise patience
سأعيش مثلك لي وللدنيا معاً
وأقول مثلك كيف يزدوجان
I will live like you for myself and the world together
And speak like you how can they pair
وأظلُّ تزدحم الحياة بمهجتي
أبدًا ويجتنب الزحام مكاني
And I will remain crowded in life with my mind
While avoidance of crowds suits my place
قد غيَّرتك وما تُغيِّر شاعراً
عشرون عاماً في طراز بيان
You have changed me and twenty years will not change
The style of a poet's rhetoric
فرحات دنيا لا يُكدِّر صفوَها
بالمَيْنِ غيرُ سرائر الإنسان
Joy of a world no sorrow clouds its serenity
Other than the joys of man
في عزلة أنا والحبيب تؤمُّنا
دنيا الجمال ونحن منفردان
In isolation I and the beloved find safety
The world of beauty while we are apart
