She saw his lips and tears welled up
Nothing caught her eye but their yellowness
She felt for a hand that once embraced her waist
But found no life in it, nor blood
She leaned into his ears as if
To let him hear her regrets and remorse
And opened his eyelids to see in them
Two lamps that once shone bright, now dimmed
Two lamps that once illuminated for her eyes
The beauty of his smiling face, now blinded
They were the most beautiful beholders of that face
But death has now aggrieved its beauty
She said despite herself: Today you are dead
Though the morning still smiles unperturbed
Oh love! After you
You will become a sickness in hearts, unwell
You will become wherever I go, jealousy follows me
In a mind that sees fantasy as truth embodied
You will seem easy at first
But prove bitterly painful in the end
Either you fall short of your goal
And I regret, or exceed it aggressively
Your sweetness within me prevails
And your water is mixed with bliss and bitterness
Yes, you will become, oh love, untruthful
Obstinate, reluctant, aloof, and frowning
The breeze blows away your affections when it blows
And breaths cast you to every filthy place
You go around, oh love, offering
A cup that entices the insightful optimist
A cup whose rims are bliss and pleasure
But contains nothing but poison and bitterness
You shake the strength of firm souls
Leaving them distraught and troubled
And breathe into the minds of the weak
Making them cry out loud and speechless
Oh love, you forgive grave sins
But make light sins a burden
Oh love, you spare those who walk with a cane
But destroy those who trespass
You take money from the wealthy
And sometimes grant treasures to the penniless
Passionate Majnun and poetic Wareqa
Oh, what an afflicted heart is theirs!
The young may dream in the intoxication of youth
While the old man is foolishly enamored with you
Brazen with no fear of encountering him
Timid when fear is wiser
Merciful at times though hard-hearted in you
Worthy of cruelty yet deserving of mercy
Most deceitful when called impartial
Most difficult when called acquiescent
When you wish, you embolden the coward, hasty
And insinuate fear into the heart of the bold, hesitant
Oh misleading love, move on!
Be unto people a torrent or hellfire
Move and separate a father from his son
No mother will show tenderness, no child will be loving
Oh love, how many tribulations you hide
Sending them raging through earth and sky!
Let the most wretched of people in love be
The most deserving of comfort and tranquility
