You have shamed the roses, O beauty,

So their bright red faded like paint.

You have awed the flowers, O charmer,

So they bowed their heads seeking refuge.

    The branches leaned angrily

When your smiling mouth blossomed, O basil plant.

And where can the birds match their warbling

To the warbling over your flowering meadow?

The roses did not blush for it,

Safe from any shame in the gardens of paradise.

Nor did the angry basil smile

    Evilly or stain its tongue.

The swaying branches were not bent

By arrogance or tempted to bend.

As for that singing bird, his trills

Cannot be bought with gems or gold.

No king with sword in hand prevents

The humble from hearing his beautiful song.

How good is beauty and how good for it

Is an adornment, if it were not for good character.
