عندماwhen تذهبُdeparts الحياةُlife ويَبقىْand remains
لكَfor you منهاof it عمرٌa lifetime بلاwithout نبضَاتِheartbeats
When life departs, and there remains
When life departs, leaving you
For you, of it, a lifetime without heartbeats,
An age with no heartbeats,
ثمّthen تُنعىْis announced dead إليكَto you نفسُكَyour soul إذْsince ماnot
عدْتَyou continued to be حيًّاalive بلbut rather صِرتَyou became فيamong الأمواتِthe dead
Then your soul's death is announced to you, for you are no longer
And your own soul eulogizes you, since
Alive, but have become one of the dead.
You are no longer alive, but among the dead,
لاdo not تلُمْهاblame it إذat ذاكthat time واعتبْand find fault عليهاwith it
إنْif تشأْyou wish واعلمْand know أنّهاthat it is فيamong الثّقاتِthe trustworthy
Do not blame it then; reproach it
Do not blame it then, and do not reproach it
If you wish, and know that it is among the trustworthy.
If you wish, and know that it is among the faithful,
ذمّcondemn عمرًاa lifetime لمْdid not يجتهدْstrive قطّever فيهاwithin it
لاnot لهاfor it أوor لِمنْfor whoever بُعَيْدshortly after المَماتِdeath
Condemn a lifetime that never once strove within it,
Blame a lifetime that never strove
Neither for its sake nor for those just after death.
For it or for those beyond death,
إنّindeed فيin بعضِsome of العُمْرlife's span ِكبْرًاarrogance وزهوًاand vanity

Indeed, in some of life's span lie arrogance and vanity,
For in some lifetimes there is arrogance and vanity
Exalting itself above life's bounty.
That looks down on the loved ones of life.
ظنُّهits belief بالحياةِabout life أنّthat الحياةَlife
تبَعٌsubordinate للأيّامِto the days والسَّنواتِand the years
Its belief about life is that life
Its assumption of life is that life
Is subject to the days and years.
Is subordinate to days and years.

For it sees in life a shadow that lengthens, if
It sees in life a shadow that lingers until
It lasts long, until it dissolves into the darkness.
It melts away into the darkness,

Rather, it walks as it pleases, and slows
And it walks according to its desires, shortening
If it dawdles, and shortens its steps.
Its steps whether hurried or not.

So it sleeps until, when it awakens,
It sleeps until when it awakens
It cries the cry of one lost in the wastelands:
It cries out like one lost in the desert:
أينwhere نفسيmy soul الّتيwhich بهاin it اسْميmy name ورسْميand my form

Where is my soul, which holds my name and form,
Where is my soul that bore my name, form,
And my traits, my habits, and my attributes?
Qualities, habits and traits?

Where has it gone from me? Without it I am
Where has it gone from me? Without it
Nothing but a dream without nights,
I am but a dream, nothing but nights.

A stranger walking the earth like a specter

Who sees, if he sees, only the dead,

And a weight upon the palms of time,
And a burden on the palms of time
Nothing has come from him but woes.
That brings nothing but tribulations,

نَcompletion of 'sorrow' وليسَand there is not فيهِwithin him منany of الشّهواتِthe appetites
He knows no joy, just as he knows no
Ignorant of joy just as he is ignorant of grief,
Sorrow, and there are no appetites within him.
With no desires within him,

He does not hunger unless worms hunger
Hungry only when worms
Within him; they will leave nothing of him but mortal remains.
Hunger, leaving of him only scraps,

Without judgment or heart, he goes on
Without opinion or heart, passing
In the void, blind, without aims.
Blindly through the void without purpose,

تٌcompletion of 'dead' خلاwas free موتُهhis death منof السَّكراتِthe throes of dying
He awaits death, unaware that he is
Awaiting death unaware that his death
Dead—his death was free of the throes of dying.
Lacks the sweetness of deaths,
يجهلُdoes not know الموتُDeath كيفَhow ماتَhe died وأينَand where
ماnot نعاهُannounced his death حتّىeven نعاةُdeath-heralds النعاةِthe death-heralds
Death does not know how he died, or where;
Unknowing how he died or where
Not even the heralds of death's heralds announced his death.
Even the ushers of death eulogized him,
لاno دعاءَprayer علىagainst حياةٍa life أُهينتْwas humiliated
بلrather علىagainst عمرٍa lifetime غرّwas deluded بالدّعواتِby prayers

No curse upon a life that was humiliated,
No prayer over a disgraced life,
But upon a lifetime deluded by prayers,
But over an age that cursed with calls,

And upon whoever, when death comes upon that lifetime,
And over one who, when death came to an age,
Rises in ignorance to pray for its deliverance.
Stood in ignorance calling for salvation.
