Souls do not endure by abandoning their homes,

No, nor do they last by remaining there.

Mortal are we—I, you, and he likewise.

Wherever we choose, our deaths are inevitable.

    عنْ حسابِ أنفاسِكَ لا يصُومُ

    That is a death that overtakes the shadows by day;

It never fasts from counting your breaths.

Then if ever you wear them as sandals or hurry,

It comes to hover within you and your blood.

Silent as shadows, gentle and forbearing,

Announcing appointed ends, yet keeping yours secret.

Then, when its command comes, it flees from you,

Taking the dearest gift the Generous One bestowed on you.

And if it draws it out as you walk,

That is because the hereafter is everlasting bliss.

    O Gazan, whom they besieged

Before flesh could clothe your bones,

They rushed upon you as a child, and did not wait un-

til hāʾ and mīm met in your mouth.

    ما نجَا من أهلِيكَ حتّى الكليمُ

    In you they fought the Chosen One and the Messiah;

Among your kin, not even God's interlocutor escaped.

And those who professed Islam, swearing

That the saying 'its environs' is unfounded—

Woe to them! How often they prayed blessings upon the prophets,

Their faces prostrate upon the dust.

Then, when you sought their help, thyme-scented,

They prostrated themselves, embittered by it, and have not yet risen.

May they be disgraced when they greet you

And pray—their sheikh and their leader.

They divided mankind's Lord as an inheritance, and became

Lords, every one of them, while you are destitute.

    فإذا لمْ تفعلْ فأنتَ الغشُومُ

    So choose one lord or two, and worship;

If you do not, you are the ruthless oppressor.

And behold, you worship God alone,

And behold, you are a reviled polytheist.

You buy lords with a Lord, in exchange for

A paradise in heaven—though you are God's interlocutor?!

The jinn deemed their killing you so grave

That Iblis imagined he was sinless.

Had you seen Iblis's fear of them,

You would have asked a thousand times: 'Is this the great oppressor?'

O chosen one, rise above it; whether slain

Or slayer, you are the one blamed.

Like flies, those rights rise in a frenzy

If a sick rat complains amid the rubbish.

They shun the prophets' purity! Yet the purity

Of the prophets is an adversary to every filth.

Their character springs from their morals—foul are the mor-

als of a people from whom the Accursed flees.

Are these rights, though they have not recovered a loaf?

Or corruption through which Sodom was restored?

    أبِها مُرّ عيشِكَ يسْتقيمُ؟

    Life never once went right for them through these;

Will the bitterness of your life be set right through them?

God has indeed spared you poisons that kill

Everything praiseworthy, while the vile remains.

O dead one, who held sway for an age,

You will surely return, and the base one will perish.

    إنّما اسْتعجَلتْ فناكَ الغُمومُ

    Never in their lifetime did the years hasten against you;

It was sorrow that hastened your passing.

A thousand foes and a thousand griefs; then grew tender

Grief and death—but not slumbering life.

They hunted you, an old man upon death's sword,

For in your footsteps a roaring lion cub is seen.

They hunted you dead, on the pretext that

Within you a spirit swims in defiance of death.

Return the treasure, wherever it may be, so

The adversary cannot boast of it before his villages.

And it is, whether you wish it or not, a mother's right.

That is the meaning of their saying, 'May he be shown mercy.'

This is the land of al-Shām, my master, moth-

er of treasures, and every treasure is sought.

And leave a light of yourself that roams the lands,

As the stars roamed the sky.

Or a fragrance that unlocks the fetter of a spring

Absent from a land whose heat is fevered.

Be far from their vaunted favors, beyond their reach,

And near, one through whom the deprived are healed.

Be a Messiah whom God brings back one day,

So that before him the great oppressor melts like salt.

Be like tidings of the unseen, revealed, then becoming

Events that dwell between the eyelids,

So that you become remorse within their breasts

If their days of devastation dawn,

And joy within the souls of the steadfast

On the day a noble son brings victory.

And praise God that years have passed away

In which sorrows shared your life with you.
