ياO لَيْتنيwould that I were كوْكباًa star أغيبُI disappear
بيْنَamong النُّجومِthe stars ولاand not أؤوبُI return
Oh, would that I were a star, vanishing
Oh, if only I were a planet, disappearing
among the stars, never to return,
Among the stars, restless, not settling
بلاwithout مُقامٍan abode لهُto it أُنيبُI turn back
أوor غرْبةٍexile همُّهاits sorrow يُذيبُmelts away
with no abode to which I turn back,
With no place I'd reside or grief dissolving me
nor exile whose sorrow melts me away;
With no youth I'd aspire or old age making me wilt
بلاwithout شبابٍyouth لهُfor it أتوقُI yearn
أوْor أُخرياتٍlater years بهاin them أشيبُI grow gray
without youth for which I yearn,
No death I'd fear speaking of or life causing me to grieve
or later years in which I grow gray;
No past testing me or present with miserable living
لاno موْتَdeath منْfrom ذِكرِهِits mention أهيمُI wander distraught
ولاand no حياةًa life بهاin it أخيبُI am disappointed
no death whose mention leaves me distraught,
I'd accompany the star in space, roaming
nor a life in which I meet disappointment.
As it roams surrounded by the universe's directions
لاnot أبتليI endure ماضياًa past يؤودُweighs down
أوحاضراًor a present عيْشُهُits life كئيبُdreary
I endure no past that weighs me down,
And ascend into the dome of the sky
nor a present whose life is dreary.
Calling unto Allah, and He answers my plea
أصاحبُI accompany النجْمَthe star فيin فضاءspace
أجوبهُI roam through it مثلماjust as يجوبُit roams
I keep the star company in space,
I wouldn't blame myself confusedly since
roaming through it just as it roams.
I have no sin that I'd repent doing

شمالُnorth والغربُand the west والجنوبُand the south
The universe cherishes me—its east and the
I'm tired of staying on an earth filled with
north, the west, and the south.
Breaths of sins

وand اللهَGod أدعوْI call upon فيسْتجيبُand so He answers
And I ascend the dome of heaven,
And how I wished to part so I'd return guided
and call upon God, and He answers.
By the people of heaven

I do not scourge myself in bewilderment, for
And here I am, again in the sky where
there is no sin I repent of committing.
Paths lead me

I have grown weary of remaining on an
Where I discern a man of my name
earth whose breaths are filled with sins.
Like the sun that never sets

And how often I have longed to depart, hoping I
This is me since I was created, a light
might return, guided by the people of heaven.
With clear light even for the blind

With no dust that would make me
heaven, where the paths carry me along.
Go hungry or thirsty or wretched

There I discern a man who bears my name,
No worry at night is my shelter
as though he were the sun that never sets.
Nor any illness I'd complain of

This is I, a light since I was created,
No war I'd be kindling by night
whose light the wise one discerns.
No peace where I'd be harmed

no worry in whose captivity I spend the night,
I wouldn't resemble the wicked who rave
nor illness by which I am marred;
Or a live coal whose quest goes wasted

Since I hated both together for
no peace whose humiliation afflicts me;
Both are ungrateful liars

And here I am, again in its

On a journey, long is its course

its wide expanses, where my life grows sweet.
Alas, no stranger hates me

in a paradise where life is pleasant.

How beautiful are two eyes in which my
