I see myself, unlike the rest of creation, barred

from the world, while I remained in the unseen.

I see her conditions in every face

that sought someone—then a Saturday betrayed life.

And I hear her voice: a wrongdoer's groan

    and a victor's song—both returned, and I was bewildered.

So I came to distinguish the sweet within her

from the bitter, though I was made to taste nothing.

So I filled my heart with hopes of her, despite the weariness

from the oppression within her, and said:

If only I had been created like humankind

and dwelt in a body of clay.

But I was left without an aim,

never charged with a duty, or even commanded,

so that I might escape Hell if I obeyed,

and meet it in disgrace if I disobeyed.

I neither chose nor was given a choice concerning what

I am in, nor was I ever asked.

And when I was asked about her, I said: An evil

with a home in everything that trembles.

Its glow fades if water is poured,

and blazes whenever oil is poured.

So today the clamorous one escapes her,

while he in whose mouth silence has nested perishes.

And when I was asked a second time, I answered:

    Gardens where death established justice.

Their fruits draw near to every vile person,

and marvel at the one distracted by olive pomace!

The tyrant seeks to sell words,

and you find people wherever jests are sold.

And when I was asked a third time, I added:

Even if she were offered to me, I would not refuse.

For, as toward an inevitable end, I am driven

toward her without knowledge; I have not hated her.

The sons of Adam were created only

to choose knowingly; so I grew envious.

So ask how much I lost by being far from her,

and how much I grieved in that seclusion of mine.

For I did not inherit the idols of Thamud,

nor did I venerate a star, or see one,

so that a prophet might call me to God,

and He accept me and forgive me if I repented,

and sweetness flow through the folds of my soul

just after the bitterness of unbelief I had experienced.

Did sweetness after sweetness delight the soul?!

For sweetness's essence is unripe; I have eaten nothing.

Did the Nile ever say that it was the son

of the Euphrates? Rather, a son of salt I have never drunk.

Nor was I granted worldly knowledge

with which to explore a universe I have never inhabited,

and so know Him from action, through action,

and worship Him in a communion never severed.

Nor was I given a life whose limit is death,

however long it lasts or fortune favors it,

so I might enlist reason in pursuit of excellence, and run

to where hopes lie, if time is lost.

Nor did I measure the sky when I triumphed,

nor wish to weep when I was defeated,

nor long for a beloved yesterday,

nor prepare for tomorrow and then sleep.

Nor did I seek the Gardens by keeping ties of kinship,

for I have no father, and was granted no mother.

Nor did I distinguish myself from people by a deed,

nor did any description encompass my qualities.

Shall I meet You, my God, without a sin,

and thus not rise through forgiveness granted me?

Shall I meet You, my God, without bowing,

by which I might raise my head if questioned?

So grant me a body, O Lord,

so I may err, then return if I learn.
