For which sea of verse has no share
So yesterday's death was the portion of the long poem
Of the soul, and which sea of verse has departed?
And today the one blessed with plenty is the short one

And my soul is but a river with floods
While today the fortunate one is al-Wafir.

So now you must realize that I

ويقلقُand will disturb راحَتيmy rest مرْضىthe sick القلوبِof heart
برأيٍwith an opinion أصلهُits origin الغربُthe West المُكابرْarrogant
And the sick of heart will disturb my rest
Verily, following glory is the pride
With an opinion rooted in the arrogant West.
Of men, by it the long-haired are humiliated
ألاbehold إنّindeed تليدَancestral المجدِglory فخرُthe pride of
الرجالِmen بهthrough it يُذلُّare humiliated ذووthose possessing الضفائرْbraids
Behold, ancestral glory is the pride
So if you wish to return to me dead
Of men; through it, those with braids are humiliated.
You will not find a name for me in graves
فإنso if شئْتِyou wish الرجوعَto return إليّto me ميْتاdead
فلنْthen will not تجدِيyou find ليَof mine اسْماًa name فيin المَقابرْthe graves
So if you wish to return to me when I am dead,
But search for me in a grave
You will find no name of mine among the graves.
On which there is only "A Passerby's Grave"
ولكنْbut فتّشيsearch عنّيfor me بقبرٍin a grave
عليهِupon it ليسthere is not إلّاexcept " قبرُthe grave of عابرْa passerby"
But search for me in a grave
For the last cry for truth was my poetry
Bearing only: "The grave of a passerby."
At a time when truth had no supporter
فآخرُfor the last صيحةٍcry للحقّfor truth شعْريmy poetry
بوقتٍat a time ماthere is no لحقٍّfor truth فيهin it ناصِرْchampion
For my poetry is the last cry for truth
And the last commotion of beauty was
At a time when truth has no champion.
At a time when beauty's fortune faltered
وآخرُand the last وشوشاتِwhispers الحسْنِbeauty كانwas
بوقتٍat a time فيهin it حظُّthe fortune of الحسنِbeauty عاثرْfaltering
And it was the last of beauty's whispers
So beware your eyes when you wish
At a time when beauty's fortune faltered.
