I defy my luck in life, and I know

    that fortunes cling like shadows.

And I watch for the hour of sunset and flee

to the night, hoping it is more merciful than luck.

And I avoid the moons and the star, for fear

of the light, for shadows attack within it.

And whoever honored the night by honoring its darkness

found it more generous than the light.

And more helpless than darkness pursued by luck

are a wakeful man's fancies, which luck destroys.

How wretched a darkness that fears this luck,

and how blissful a sleep darker than the dark!

And I pray for its destruction and hurl stones at it:

If it sends it back, I shall surely perish—so I hold back.

And I cross the markets of fortunes, wary

of revealing what I want, lest it take revenge

and bring something I cannot bear, leaving me shocked.

For the scheming of fortunes—may you have no father!—brings regret.

    فأجودُ ما فيه شقيٌّ يُذَمّمُ

    And I marvel at a fortune whose market is haughty;

for the best of what it holds is wretched, reviled.

Then, after bewilderment, I realized that their sweetness

is protected, neither bought nor marked with a price.

    فأضربُ ذا الحظّ بذاك وأسْلمُ

    And I said, 'Surely two wretched fortunes are safer;

so I pit this luck against that, and remain safe.'

But my luck acts like devils,

for then it argued its case with something to come that would bring bliss,

and brought a woman's irresistible enchantment.

Whenever the eye beholds it, the forbidden becomes lawful.

Behold, the world smiles through it,

though whenever it saw me, it used to scowl.

So I came to see myself as the source of misery, not it,

and as a wound in its breast, lingering through the night and wounding it.

So, O you whom luck has made wretched, it is you I blame,

and your own self: luck knows it better than you do.

And they said that luck is the character of its bearers,

and speaks of nothing but what they harbor.

So this one is colocynth, tossing in its bitterness,

and that one is sugar, luxuriating in its sweetness.

And this one's luck forsakes and defeats him,

while that one's luck obeys and protects him.

So I set about changing the way I am,

hoping it would follow my example and be inspired by my deeds.

But my luck has grown old, and an old man seldom

accepts anything but what he grew gray with.

I reread the years that have passed,

and write them as I wish and dream.

And I cross above the lines, only to be dashed

against a land where fear presides and rules,

and a pulseless living being crouching on the chest,

and death—the living one who will not bargain.

And I fall into a sea that has encircled its dry land,

as though, amid its waves, I were inevitable annihilation.

    يناجزُ ضعفى والهوانَ ويهزمُ

    And there comes one in whose two arm veins my blood has flowed;

he battles my weakness and humiliation, and defeats them.

O you who have wronged your own blood, be ashamed!

For without it, you would not have lived to wrong and oppress.

I did what I did, and now I know

that I, my luck, and life are triplets.

So pardon me and be gentle, my lord Luck; do not depart,

    for I regret yesterday's ignorance.
