For love of “Dunya,” I gave my wealth and children.

So she turned my forelock gray while I was still a child.

I obeyed her, and passion was born in her abode.

And, apart from herself, she obeyed no one.

I gave her what was hardest and waited for her a long while.

Yet she passed me over for one who had never given her anything.

In her affairs, I could bear neither rival nor ally.

So another, not I, had her beauty all to himself.

    Until, when life awoke, trembling,

From a stupor whose wine was youth, now spent,

It said: “You treated me lightly; you showed no restraint,

For you zealously brought me bitterness in your love for her,

Until one of base birth drew near, criticizing—

I mean the one who won her and fled away.

I shall surely give you some of my wine to drink, so be steadfast.

How vile it is, for through it you become as one lost.

So bear its bitterness, and do not say it has spoiled.

Nothing like the crookedness you made me drink has ever passed.

For if I have awakened, there is no awakening from old age

For the one who pours it for you, save as a dead man laid in the grave.”
