The neighborhood's women have not stopped for a single night,

and ululations fill the whole east.

    Their ululations awakened the constellations

and the seven planets and the crescent moons.

So its villages donned robes of light

to answer an east whose shadow beauty urged onward in song.

So the heart's pulse wounded the workings of a mind

that had done so little to keep desire away.

Then passion's slave brought me among them,

without asking leave, like an innocent playing the fool.

    فأصابَ منها غطاها فشلَّهْ

    The fairest of them cast magic into my eye;

it struck the eye's covering and paralyzed it.

Who is the fairest? That is a vexing riddle

I did not wish to solve amid beauty's throng.

So I made a boy of myself, and of my love

a captive of a cup of coffee and a coffee pot.

Whenever a right hand was extended for a glimpse,

an eyelash bestowed a dewdrop of the eye's wine.

    ما توخَّى يوماً سِواهنَّ ملَّة

    The neighborhood's women are beauty's religion;

it has never sought any creed but them.

Until they were sent forth, it remained without an imam

or guide; then they themselves became the guides.

No weaving of rhymes has done their beauty justice,

nor an inspired artist's drawings in a magazine,

nor the flutes' moaning in songs,

nor sores on the eyelid of a lover crazed with longing.

They are neither white nor black; they are

between the two, graceful by nature.

Oh, this beauty, which is not to be blamed

if it claims prophethood, goes to excess, or claims divinity!

Oh, this beauty, which never grows old,

even if the body weakens or age bends its shadow.

How often I have wished for a kiss from it upon my cheek!

God has not forbidden healing, but has made it lawful.

    The neighborhood's women—between them and

God is a bond they preserve their whole lives.

Goodness dwells in their prayers; were it not for

it, we would have died of want or illness.

The neighborhood's women—in their blood is the glory

of the Arabs; without it, we would have accepted humiliation.

They pass it down as scripture and tradition,

through an age that left no memory of the great.

    لو أُضيعَ ما ظلّ معنىً محلَّهْ

    They have preserved its letters as they would the Book;

were it lost, no meaning would remain in its place.

    كنَّ فيهِ لمّا التظىْ خيرُ ثلَّة

    Not once have they held back from a battle;

when it blazed, they were its finest band.

Then, when the age of men passed,

they did not accept the serpents' peace and its humiliation.

The neighborhood's women are not a third, nor half,

and they are no longer few in the neighborhood's heights.

If minds, rather than bellies, are counted,

then beauty will surely invade its register.

Women whose sun is still Muna,

a Lord's handiwork—glory to Him! How majestic He is!

We have gathered for them nothing but words,

which leave the tongue only as a slip.

The ignorant heard what we said and

found it burdensome, repeating, 'How misguided he is!'

So we answered them: 'A neighborhood

whose foundation is not these women—how misguided it is!'
