    If I were a dog among dogs,

    making the heart leap at my barking,

    extorting bodies' flesh all year,

    returned as bones from sacrificial beasts,

    and setting debt to work upon necks,

    so the flesh ripened through wounds,

    my people would seek blessings through me

    at evening and in the morning,

    and agree that they were well,

    so long as I held command in the regions.

    If this dog came into wealth,

    untouchable in his palace,

    between two rivers, like a bracelet

    around two hills on the outskirts,

    يهبُّ ليلاً مع الرّياحِ

    nothing would remain of him but barking,

    rising at night with the winds;

    and beyond that, every matter

    concerning him would be off limits.

    بحاجة الصّوتِ للنّجاحِ

    He returns with bait when he finds himself

    needing the vote to succeed;

    he kisses children and hands,

    he speaks openly to the people,

    شيخًا على مجلسِ القداحِ

    and withholds the bone once he becomes

    a chief presiding over the council of gaming arrows;

    the people would justify every fault

    in him, and tell whoever disputes:

    'Praise God that we were granted

    a dog we have known as righteous.'

    If I were a head among the heads of state,

    the people's delegate by a landslide!

    exalted among my people, yet among neighbors

    head bowed in delight,

    من باب طيّارتي براحِ

    the neighborhood would be adorned for me to see it

    at ease from my plane's doorway;

    كي ألبسَ النّصَ بارتياحِ

    and religion would be threaded through a needle

    so I could wear the text in comfort;

    وسُخّرَ الشّعرُ لامتداحي

    and the eagle would be fed from my shoulders,

    and poetry harnessed to praise me;

    وزانَ منهاجَهُم كِفاحي

    and the story of my victory memorized,

    and my struggle would adorn their curriculum;

    and the East would refrain from blaming me,

    and the West would supply me with weapons.

    If a robed man came calling,

    'I have come, O people, with a proposal:

    is your claim that he is baseborn,

    or that he was born of fornication?

    Surely every trait in him

    proclaims his unmistakable lineage.

    Ramses was the god of Egypt,

    then Merneptah was brought in.'

    You would revile the truth, then say,

    with souls shrinking away from it:

    'The Companions erred concerning the Book

    and interpreted it without agreed terminology.

    so what need have we of authentic traditions?'

    by day we worship whoever has overpowered us,

    and worship God at eventide.

    God was not made; it was only

    lords that were manufactured out of barking.
