I call upon my soul to stop doing harm,

For her speech increases her misery.

For praise does not adorn noble virtues,

Nor have souls broken past their bounds through it.

Yet at forty I see her,

While injustice has set her protected land ablaze.

So I feared her suffering, though I had committed no crime,

Except that I am Canaan beneath her cloak.

So I swore by al-Aqsa and all around it: I shall surely

Lift her veil, and her radiance will appear.

For poetry is not composed without her deeds,

Nor does anyone swear by anything but her light.

And I marveled at a weanling who fancies

Himself a king and advocates selling her hills.

Did the weanling not know that I am her skin,

And her companion, pursuing death to ransom her?

Nor did he imagine she still stood by the pledge,

So she watches for me, morning and evening.

And the weanling did not know that, for her sake,

I grew used to battlefields and the splitting of foreheads!

And I am the age of 'No,' disturbing the sleep of

'Yes' in its age, and bridling its mouth.

And I am hunger's grandson; patience is my father,

And my mother is misery, with threadbare cloth her dress.

And I am the captive, the wounded, besieged

By a spiteful fire whose blaze I never feared.

It besieges my body, and I besiege

With it, the soul of him in whom it and its heat dwell.

And I am al-Husayn; Karbala has not quenched its thirst with

My blood, while Palestine's soil groans.

So from her womb I am born each morning,

And am slain, so I water her earth with Taha's blood.

And a brother of mine in Iraq and in Damascus—

We share death in exchange for her survival.

So neither hunger nor death destroys me, and life

Loves me as a girl loves her youth.

And I am the knowledgeable one, the most learned, the learner, the

Teacher, possessed of knowledge beyond compare.

And I am the mighty, the proud, the generous, possessor

Of bounty, who keeps aloof from petty things.

And in my features you see Christ as Muhammad,

And you see the Trustworthy One's essence as Christ-like.

And I was never a worshipper of stones,

And apart from the Generous One, I have worshipped no god.

I inherited Khalil, Hakim, and Yasir,

And Saad and Yasin—the lions of her battles.

And before them, Jamjum, Zir, and Abd Qadir,

And Fuad—they are the stars of her sky.

So ask whomever you like among their sons; but when

I am mentioned, he stammers, strays, and loses his way!

And when Palestine calls, ululation rises

From the heart; so who but me answers her call?

    وإنْ عشْتُ عدْتُ لأبوسَ يديْها

    So if I die, I return as a mote in her soil;

And if I live, I return to kiss her hands.

She is my soul; I cannot exist without her.

My blood is shed in exchange for safeguarding hers.
