    وهْوَ منكَ وهْوَ أغلى ما مَلكتا

    Do not sell an authentic heritage from which you sprang;

it is part of you, and the dearest thing you have owned,

panting like a beast after a foreigner

of whom you have seen only what you hated,

forgetting what a grandfather said yesterday—

he built up what had been torn down, renewing what you inherited.

Prolonged was the life of one who strove, drawing strength

from an authentic source where those you succeeded had labored.

A life was cut short that did not strive, but drew strength

from a foreigner—contentious indeed was the one you worshipped.

And ask the days: no chronicles have run red

without a foreigner with whom you were infatuated.

And dig up the earth: wherever death abounds,

there is a foreigner's scent, if only you understood.

O my dear son, that is a heritage founded by the One

in heaven, and built by those you disparaged.

From it comes magic in your eyes; if you ask it

where beauty is found, it replies: 'In you yourself.'

And on your palms lies a verse of its poetry,

still a home to longing ever since it was uttered.

Our knowledge is the root of the sciences; our art, the root

of the arts. May the root from which you came endure.

Our truthfulness is word and deed; our generosity, family

and home; our beneficence among people is manifold.

Our dancing is beauty and grace; our oud is magic

and ecstasy and the east wind; from it you were drawn.

All beings clothe themselves in counterfeit beauty,

while beauty has clothed itself in you since you were created.

Light follows day wherever it goes,

and day has followed you since you rose.

The soul seeks peace wherever it may be,

and peace is in your footsteps wherever you go.

O my dear son, has what you inherited made you miserable?

Or was it heavy to bear, so you rested?

If you knew that it is in your flesh,

nay, in your soul as well, your burden would grow light.

Or because a foreigner was bewildered by it,

then said something about it that frightened you?

Or because of a fetter? Surely light's fetter is a sun,

without which it would be rootless and scattered.

That is alive; it does not live through humankind,

rather, humankind lives through it, whether you will it or not.

It is the first of creation and its most enduring; and all

besides it is death's offspring, if only you knew.

    بل وباهِ فيهِ وافحِمْ أيْن كنتَا

    So sing of what lies between your hands;

nay, boast of it and leave them speechless wherever you are.

And tell the foreigner, if he asks you:

'You are no match for what you see, whatever you may do.'
