And indeed, when I meet my Lord, shackled

with sins weighing as much as mountains and hills,

and my remorse's silence thundering in my head—

if only He would send me back, so I might repent!

And part of me bears down on another, inflicting torment,

and each, through me, has become fuel for Hell.

Is there any plea for me, that one might rise to make excuses

for one whose heart was tainted with polytheism?

And my counselor in earthly life passes by, proclaiming God's oneness,

and the one I faulted yesterday has fewer faults.

And my companion in earthly life is beside me, reproaching me:

If only, when you headed north, I had gone south!

And a balance of justice awakens within me, shaking me:

Can a "world" fill a cup on Resurrection Day?

So wretched was the day I lived imagining

that I had been granted victory when I filled pockets!

And oh, the ill fortune of a war from which I returned crowned

with a victory in exchange for which I lost wars!

And tongues of fire are stretched out, as though they were

    devils' heads baring their fangs.

And Ahmad never ceases prostrating before the Lord of the Throne,

and the Lord of the Throne never ceases answering Taha.

And fear assails hope, shaking it:

Did you worship one Lord, or did you worship many lords?

I say, having failed my day through its yesterday,

and my soul by wronging it, while I was frivolous:

My God, You extended love from Your presence,

yet I extended nothing but sins.

And I am indeed content if I am saved by Your pardon,

and content if torment is decreed as my lot.
