ليتَ من أفتى عنِ الفتوى يصومُ

ليتَ من أفتى عنِ الفتوى يصومُ

فالفتاوى تربُها الخصْبُ عُلومُ

فالفتاوى تربُها الخصْبُ عُلومُ

If only those who issue fatwas would fast from issuing them!

For knowledge is the fertile soil of fatwas.

إنّها إنْ نُمِّيَتْ في أرضِ جهلٍ

إنّها إنْ نُمِّيَتْ في أرضِ جهلٍ

حكرَ الأسواقَ أيباسٌ وثومُ

حكرَ الأسواقَ أيباسٌ وثومُ

Indeed, if they are cultivated in the soil of ignorance,

Onions and garlic will monopolize the markets.

أو أتاها مُطلِقا ذو نصفِ عقلٍ

أو أتاها مُطلِقا ذو نصفِ عقلٍ

قرَّ في الآذانِ غربانٌ وبومُ

قرَّ في الآذانِ غربانٌ وبومُ

Or if a half-wit comes along issuing them,

Crows and owls will settle in the ears.
