May God not remove an evil called envy

from those who deemed themselves something, though they are nothing.

From it, a burning anguish coursed through their blood,

with which their black hearts seethe.

They have faces to which a yellow pallor clings,

with no sickness or swelling at its root,

but only rancor with which the body boils.

When it grows severe, blood flows from their anuses.

As long as you cling to silence and strive

so that the voice and the words remain theirs,

then misery and distress will steer clear of you,

and you are safe as long as you comply.

But if you set out to revive what they buried alive,

they erupt against you, volcanoes full of lava,

until you turn over mornings and cannot find

a morning when a mouth has spoken ill of anyone but you.

May God not rid them of what has united them:

evil and harm that dwarf their lifespans.

For you may be esteemed if they draw strength from it,

and you may be despised if they are free of it.

As long as you are content with little and depend

on handouts, neither complaining nor discontented,

then hunger and hardship will keep away from you,

and you live in comfort as long as you bear the cost.

But if you enter life just as they have,

you find yourself accused of deceit and spreading corruption.

So scant provision is your lot, with debts and endurance,

while theirs is power, prestige, and blessings.

May God not rid them of what has brought them ruin:

an evil that has diminished them—and into deficiency they plunge.

And you may be fulfilled if they are bolstered by it,

and you may be afflicted if remorse visits them.
