Between a fire and a sea, the people were given a choice:

Either to burn in the fire or drown in the sea.

And death has waited long at the boundary,

Until a people grown old in wandering decides.

    للبحرِ عمرٌ وعمرُها يُدانيهِ

    Do not rush matters, O people;

The sea has a lifespan, and the fire's nearly matches it.

For above the fire is water that will destroy it,

And beneath the sea is fire that will destroy it.

And perhaps the two will hasten their meeting; for oppression—

If it turns against itself—nothing can deter it.

May the embers die out when the two meet,

And the sea become smoke that covers them.

Yaqub did not stoke the fire, nor wreak havoc

In the sea, except because that saves him.
