    And our hands bestowed favors,

    so our lands grew desolate.

    And our livestock were exhausted,

and our spring turned to mud.

And horses were turned loose—how often

our glories had risen through them!

    And sciences were neglected—how often

our desert lands had risen through them!

And they were replaced with ignorance that

became our mufti and our judge.

    And minds were given power—indeed,

the West had become their religion.

So we came to be without knowledge,

calling out in our gathering places:

    نوالي منْ يعَاديْنا

    We oppose those who side with us;

we side with those who oppose us.

    So from West to West,

    and our efforts had failed.

    And our pasts were distorted,

    so we betrayed, uncaring.

    And our meanings were dwarfed,

    and our aims were Westernized.

    And platforms were erected

to hang what binds us in brotherhood,

and to spread every hateful thing,

    and to corrupt our songs,

    and to conceal our merits,

    and to expose our faults.

And we no longer know who we

are, or who our people are.

    And we defied teachings,

    so we became condemned.

    so we became debtors.

    And we squandered Palestine,

yet the corners of our eyes did not weep.

As though debauchery among us has, for

    ages, been bantering with us.

    And when God sent

    the prophets, answering the call,

    we refused, then said: "This

is not what we wish for."

    And we fought and slaughtered,

    so we were not sparing.

    and nothing equals us

save ignorance that draws near to us.

So may God not grant us refuge,

nor may we be granted refuge.
