النّاسُpeople للناسِfor people حتّىeven وإنِand if اخْتلفواthey differ
فيْماin what اسْتطابواthey find pleasing أوِor ارْتدواthey wear أوِor اعتقدُواthey believe
People belong to people, even when they differ
People are there for one another, even if they differ
in what they cherish, what they wear, or what they believe.
In what they find pleasing, or wear, or believe.
هدْيُguidance النبيِّthe Prophet وإخوةٌand brothers لهُof his بُعثواwere sent
منfrom قبلbefore للنّاسِto people لطفاًkindness أينماwherever وُجِدواthey were found
Such was the Prophet’s guidance, and that of brothers of his who were sent
Such is the guidance of the Prophet and of his brothers, sent
before him as a kindness to people, wherever they might be.
In earlier times as a kindness to people, wherever they were.
فكنْso be أُخيَّmy dear brother كماas أرادكَintended you القدرُfate
واجْذُلْand rejoice إذاwhen جَذِلواthey rejoice واكمدْand grieve إذاwhen كمِدواthey grieve
So be, my brother, as destiny intended you to be;
So be, my dear brother, as fate intended you to be.
rejoice when they rejoice, and grieve when they grieve.
And rejoice when they rejoice, and grieve when they grieve.
وامْدُدْand extend يديكyour two hands بإحسانٍwith kindness لِمنْto those who نُكبواwere afflicted
وادْعُand pray بخيرٍfor good لمنْfor those who نجَواsurvived ومنand those who فُقِدواwere lost
Extend your hands in kindness to those struck by disaster,
And extend your hands in kindness to those struck by calamity.
and pray for the welfare of those saved and those lost.
And pray for good for those who survived and those who were lost.
إنّindeed البلاياcalamities بناتُthe daughters of الدّهرِTime هنّthey لهُfor it

Calamities are the daughters of Time; they are his
Indeed, calamities are the daughters of Time; they are its
champion and support against the children of humankind.
Ally and support against humankind.
ترىthey see البلادَthe lands بعينٍwith one eye لاnot اثنتينِtwo فلاso neither
They behold all lands with one eye, not two; thus
They see the lands with one eye, not two, so neither
neither race nor color nor country matters.
Race nor color nor country matters.

nor any creed adopted among life’s varied ways,
Or any doctrine followed in the varied ways of life,

To ward off people's evil eyes and envy!
فاليومَfor today همْthey وغداًand tomorrow أنتَyou ومنand those who قربُواare near
بهاthrough them تساوىْbecame equal القريبونthose near ومنْand those who بَعدُواare far away
Today it is they; tomorrow, you and those nearby.
For today it is they; tomorrow, you and those near you.
Through calamity, those near and those far are made equal.
Through them, those near and those far become equal.
فكنْso be لمنْto those who بعدُواare far away عوناًa help بيومهِمُon their day

So be a help to those far away on their day,
So be a help to those far away on their day,
lest help be scarce tomorrow, on your own.
Lest aid be scarce tomorrow, on your day.
ولاand do not تحاجِجْargue بدينٍusing a faith منهfrom it حظّهُمُtheir share
ماwhat ينفعُbenefits الناسَpeople فيماwhile حظُّكyour share الزّبدُfroth
Do not argue from a religion of which their share
And do not argue using a faith from which their share is
is whatever benefits people, while your share is foam.
What benefits people, while your share is froth.
تقولُyou say ماnot شكَرواthey thanked اللهَGod علىfor النّعمِthe blessings
وقدand indeed بعُدتَyou grew distant عنfrom اللهِGod كماjust as ابْتعدواthey drew away
You say they did not thank God for their blessings,
You say, 'They have not thanked God for the blessings,'
yet you have grown as distant from God as they have.
Yet you have grown distant from God, just as they have.
وإنّماbut only بعدُهمْtheir distance عنهُfrom Him لجهْلهِمُbecause of their ignorance
فلاso do not تقولنّever say بعدُhereafter أنّهمthat they كنَدواwere ungrateful
Their distance from Him comes only from their ignorance;
But their distance from Him is only due to their ignorance.
so never say afterward that they were ungrateful.
So never say hereafter that they have been ungrateful.
ولوْand if دلَلْتَyou guided عليهِto Him الناسَpeople ماnot جحَدواthey denied

Had you guided people to Him, they would not have denied Him;
And had you guided people to Him, they would not have denied Him.
but you settled gladly into this world and all it promises.
But you found comfort in worldly life and what it promises.
وقدْand indeed حباكَgranted you الكريمُthe Generous One أوّلَthe first of النعمِthe blessings

فلمْyet did not تصُنْهاyou preserve it فنُهْso speak in praise بالسّلمof peace يأتِwill come غدُtomorrow
The Bountiful had granted you the foremost of blessings,
And the Generous One has granted you the first of blessings,
yet you did not preserve it—so proclaim peace, that a tomorrow may come.
Yet you did not preserve it; so extol peace, and tomorrow will come.
