حينَwhen حيّيْتهُI greeted him علىْon كتفِthe shoulder of وادِيmy valley
The full moon filled with redness, and so did I,
The full moon turned red and I became full
when I greeted him on the shoulder of my valley.
When I greeted him on the shoulder of the valley
كانَhe was قبلbefore يومينِtwo days طِفلاًa child وكنتُand I was
ماnot مَلاناfilled us إلّاexcept هَوىًa passion فيin اشْتدادِgrowing intensity
He was a child two days before, and so was I;
Two days before he was a child and I was
nothing filled us but a passion growing stronger.
Nothing but growing passion between us

His state was that of a little girl, when there awoke in
His state was like that of a girl when she awoke to
her a passion that roused a slumbering allure.
A passion that awoke temptation in her sleep
وسوَىand other than طفلٍa child اختبىhid تحْتَbeneath كهلٍa middle-aged man

لمnot أكُنْI was حتّىuntil أقبلَhe approached فيwith تهادِgentle swaying
And nothing but a child hiding beneath a middle-aged man
And was equal to a child who hid under an old man
was I, until he approached, gently swaying.
I was not until he came forward in his advance
سارَhe walked نحويْtoward me وسْرتُand I walked حتّىuntil تلاقىْmet

He walked toward me, and I walked, until we met—
He walked toward me and I walked until
the two blazing ones—while our fire raged on.
The two flames met and our fire kept advancing
ذاكَthat سرّthe secret of اتّساعِthe expansion of بدِرthe full moon of السّماءِthe sky
ليلَthe night of أمسِyesterday وذاكَand that سرُّthe secret of ابتعادِيmy withdrawal
That is the secret of the sky's full moon growing larger
That is the secret of the widening of the sky’s full moon
last night, and that is the secret of my withdrawal.
The night before last, and that is the secret of my distance

If only the sun would tell of us; for were it not for
If only the sun would talk about us, for if not for us
us, her day would have clothed itself in black.
Her day would not be adorned with black
