تعسmay he be wretched الهِلالHilal القَهوجيُّthe coffeehouse keeper لِأَنَّهُbecause he
تعس الهِلال القَهوجيُّ لِأَنَّهُ
قَدindeed قَطَّعcut short الأَنفاسthe breaths فيin أَنفاسِهِhis breaths
قَد قَطَّع الأَنفاس في أَنفاسِهِ
Wretched be Hilal the coffeehouse keeper, for he
Woe to this crescent moon of bent stature
has cut breaths short in his own breathing.
For it has severed breaths amidst breaths
هَذاthis الهِلالHilal هُوَhe is الهَلاكdestruction وَإِنَّماand it is only that
هَذا الهِلال هُوَ الهَلاك وَإِنَّما
غَلطواthey erred فَلَمso did not يَضعواthey put العصاthe stick فيin رَاسهِhis head
غَلطوا فَلَم يَضعوا العصا في رَاسهِ
This Hilal is destruction itself; it is only that
This crescent moon is demise itself
they erred and did not put the stick in his head.
Yet they erred and placed no stick to its head
