لَيتَwould that مَنwhoever يَبكيweeps عَلىfor مُفتقدsomeone lost
أَسَفاًin sorrow يَبكيweeps عَلىfor مَنthe one whom وَلَداhe begot
Would that whoever weeps for someone lost
I wish those who mourn the departed
in sorrow would weep for the one he has begotten.
With sorrow mourn him who was born

وَإِلىand toward الأَهوالthe terrors هَذاthis one قَدalready غَداhas gone forth
That one has left behind this world's suffering,
That one has left worldly pleasures
and this one has gone forth toward terrors.
While this one moves toward terrors
لَيتَwould that شِعريmy knowledge أَيّwhich شَخصperson لَمnot يَمُتdie
لَمnot يَكُنbe ماتَdied مِراراًmany times كَمداof grief
Would that I knew: who, though not yet dead,
I wonder, which person has not died
has not died many times of grief?
Who did not die repeatedly in life
فَاِعذُرso forgive الطفلthe child إِذاif الطفلthe child بَكىweeps
إِنَّهُindeed he لاقٍwill encounter أَسىsorrow أَوor نَكداmisery
So forgive the child if the child weeps:
So forgive the child if the child cries
he is to encounter sorrow or misery.
He faces sorrows or sadness
وَهناand the joy الوالدof the father لِلطفلfor the child عزاًcondolences
فَلَقَدfor indeed فارَقَhe left behind عَيشاًa life رَغداcomfortable
And the father's joy calls for condolences to the child,
And here is the parent consoling the child
for he has left behind a life of ease.
For he has left a life of comfort

He did not distinguish hardship from hope,
He did not excel in hoping for good
no, nor did he fear violence from enemies.
Nor fear any evil or harm
