يَقولونthey say ليto me اِهجُsatirize الطَبلthe drum لِكنَّهُمbut they كنواalluded indirectly
عَنto الرَجُلthe man المَشهورwell-known فيamong الناسthe people بِالطَبلِas 'the drum'
They tell me, 'Satirize the drum,' but they alluded
They tell me to satirize the drummer, but they were
to the man known among the people as 'the drum.'
Talking about the man famous among people for drums
فَقُلتُso I said لَعَلَّperhaps الجاهلينthe ignorant يَسوؤهمdispleases them
مَقاليَmy saying هَذاthis one قَدindeed تَفَرَّدhas stood alone بِالجَهلِin ignorance
So I said: perhaps the ignorant would be vexed
So I said maybe the ignorant are hurt
by my saying, 'This man has no peer in ignorance.'
By my saying which excelled in ignorance
وَهَجوand satirizing لَئيمthe base man القَومof the people أَنفىmore effective at dispelling لذلّهhis humiliation
كَنفيlike removing غبارdust النَعلof the shoe ينفضُis shaken off بِالنَعلِwith a shoe
And satirizing the base man among them better dispels his humiliation,
And the satire of the mean people is more fragrant to their meanness
like removing a shoe's dust, shaken off with a shoe.
Like the dust of a sandal shaken off by the sandal
وَلَكنbut سَأوليهI shall bestow on him المَديحpraise فَإِنَّهُfor indeed it is so
سَيَظهرwill become apparent مَعنىthe meaning قَذفيَmy casting الدرّpearls بِالوَحلِinto the mire
But I shall bestow praise on him, for indeed
But I will praise him, for
the meaning of my casting pearls into the mire will become clear.
The meaning of my throwing the pearl in the mud will become clear
