هُمthey عَيَّرونيthey reproached me بِالسُكوتfor silence وماand did not دَرواknow
هُم عَيَّروني بِالسُكوت وما دَروا
أَنّيthat I بِأَخلاقby the virtues of الكِرامthe noble تَخلّقيmy cultivation of character
أَنّي بِأَخلاق الكِرام تَخلّقي
They reproached me for my silence, not knowing
They taunt me for my silence, not knowing
That I model my character on the virtues of the noble.
That I am adorned with the virtues of nobility
ياO لِلعَجائبwhat wonders! هَلquestion marker أُلامُam I blamed وَقَدand indeed رَوواthey have related
يا لِلعَجائب هَل أُلامُ وَقَد رَووا
أنّthat البَلاءcalamity موكَّلcharged with attending بِالمَنطقِto speech
أنّ البَلاء موكَّل بِالمَنطقِ
Oh, what wonders! Am I to be blamed, though they have related
How strange! Should I be blamed when they have seen
That calamity is bound to speech?
That ordeals are assigned according to one's speech
