مَنازلdwellings الجُهّالthe ignorant فيin عَصرِناour age
مَنازل الجُهّال في عَصرِنا
سَمَتrose high وَلَمand did not تَسمُrise high بِفعلthrough deeds of الكَرَمgenerosity
سَمَت وَلَم تَسمُ بِفعل الكَرَم
The dwellings of the ignorant in our age
The abodes of the ignorant in our time
Have risen high, though not through deeds of generosity.
Have been exalted, though not through noble deeds
ياO! حسنbeauty ماwhat قالَsaid المحاجيthe riddler بِهاof them
يا حسن ما قالَ المحاجي بِها
حِمارُan ass وَحشwild صارَcame to be تَحتَbeneath القَدَمthe foot
حِمارُ وَحش صارَ تَحتَ القَدَم
How fine is what the riddler said of them:
How true are the words the critic spoke of them
A wild ass has come to be beneath the foot.
The wild donkey has become the one trampled underfoot
