Our love is for graceful, beautiful maidens, beyond dispute.

Through it, our souls are sold and bought.

And I am smitten with a gazelle of the herd, dark-eyed, with bright whites and black pupils.

I jealously guard his cheeks from the eyes of humankind.

Ah, if only they were blind to the beauty of his form,

so that no one might behold the ripe rose of his cheek

but me, and then pluck a garden of myrtle and irises.

Such is my creed; the cheek is my religion and my constant pursuit.

And part of my creed, in the law of love, is that I

am jealous over the roses of the gardens for his sake.
