O you who reproach me for loving him in whose very being

God has dazzled the minds of His creatures.

I swear by the signs of light from his cheeks:

The beloved passed by; I was amazed at his swaying steps.

Oh, welcome to our beloved and his charms!

By God, the fair one did not, by his rebuff, distress

His love-worn admirer, save through his foe's folly.

    He is a bough when coyness plays upon his form;

The rose envies him for the redness of his cheek,

And myrtle curves over his cheeks.

My soul be ransom for a visitor who bestowed joy,

And the soul lies between death and desire.

    يا خَجلة الأَغصان مِنهُ إِذا اِنثَنى

    A young gazelle, to whom lions bow when he gazes;

Oh, how the boughs are shamed by him when he bends,

And how his glances put the gazelles to shame!

A happy morning to you! The star of his good fortune shone

From his face, and his auspicious bird-omens appeared.

And since the enemies sipped the wine of his monastery,

They said, 'Forget your love for him with another,

And love someone else.' I said, 'No, by his life!

I seek no maiden in place of my soul's soul,

As a substitute; constancy in love is habit enough for me.'

A moon whom piety's ornaments have clothed in bliss,

He made prayer and fasting his worship.

Oh, if only he had bestowed his alms on me!

What harm would it do the one who is peerless in this age,

If he bestowed kindness to revive me and granted his favor?

I swear by the sight of his splendid, beautiful face:

The reward of one who prayed and fasted is not like that of one

Who revived one slain by estrangement after his death.
