ياO مَنyou who تَسمّىare called صالحاًSalih (righteous) بَينamong المَلاthe people
يا مَن تَسمّى صالحاً بَين المَلا
غَلطاًmistakenly لِأَنّbecause الفعلthe conduct لَيسَis not بِصالحِrighteous
غَلطاً لِأَنّ الفعل لَيسَ بِصالحِ
O you who are called Salih among the people,
O you who is called virtuous among the chiefs
Mistakenly, for your conduct is not righteous.
Wrongly, for the deed is not virtuous
ماnot أَنتَyou بِالخلّa close companion الوَفيّloyal وَصاحبand a bearer of الthe
ما أَنتَ بِالخلّ الوَفيّ وَصاحب ال
ودِّaffection الصَفيِّpure وَلاnor الصَديقthe friend الصالحِrighteous
ودِّ الصَفيِّ وَلا الصَديق الصالحِ
You are not a loyal companion, nor a bearer of
You are not the sincere, faithful friend
Pure affection, nor a righteous friend.
Nor the good, righteous companion
قَدindeed ساءmarred طَبعكyour nature حسنthe beauty of صَوتكyour voice فَاِغتَدىso it became
قَد ساء طَبعك حسن صَوتك فَاِغتَدى
عِندَupon السَماعhearing كَصَوتlike the voice of ناقةthe she-camel of صالحِSalih
عِندَ السَماع كَصَوت ناقة صالحِ
Your nature has marred your voice’s beauty, so it became
Your nature is bad despite your beautiful voice
When heard, like the voice of Salih’s she-camel.
Which becomes excessive when heard like Salih's she-camel
