O brother of the fawn and the gazelles,

    do whatever you wish;

    you are within my heart.

Be gentle with the lovesick, enthralled lover,

O little branch of the bān tree!

    Indeed, my patience has departed

since the full moon of that face appeared.

    The slender-figured one

    increased my longing within me.

And the sun of wine was unveiled

    by his honey-sweet mouth

within the sanctuary of the cheek.

The Pleiades' bright stars brought forth

in the sky of the necklace

    two stars of the bosom.

So forgive whoever bore tales: the charmer

    bewildered my mind

    when he walked.

O brother of my soul, be gentle!

My state was marked with a dot

by the dot of the beauty spot.

Love, by God, is not easy.

    Your adorned neck,

    the beauty spot's enchantment!

If I were given a first draught of wine

    by your sweet mouth,

    while the sanctuary lay empty,

it would revive my spirit; and the basil

would grow drunk among the roses

    until it formed a bower.

A gazelle of the herd strutted in self-admiration,

and my heart is his pasture.

You have never ceased grazing there.

His two eyelids wounded a heart

    that loves him passionately.

    Ah, who gave him leave?

If only your eyes saw a lovesick lover

whose longing has worn him out,

O gazelle who struts in pride!

O you who brought desolation to the love-distraught,

far be it! He has not divulged

    a secret to the talebearers.

You have deliberately prolonged the estrangement,

O sweet one with dusky lips!

    Why torment me?

And you withheld your mouth as a watering place.

    By God, how

    sweet a mouth it is!

Have you strung the pearls into a necklace,

    lovely as a smiling mouth,

O full moon of the sky?

O you who set trembling, with your eyelids,

my heart, which felt no fear

    of the magic that arose.
